Infant capsule covers are useful for protecting pēpi from the elements while you’re walking to and from the car, but they need to come off in the car. These covers limit your ability to observe baby while driving, and restrict the air flow around them which can make pēpi overheat – especially in warmer weather, or when we have heaters on to keep warm.

Another lovely sunny Monday morning for playgroup at Meadowbank Plunket!

We had an emergency vehicles theme this week. The children did some painting, spent time with the dress-ups and medical kit toys. We practiced our fire drill and earthquake drill, read some stories and sang some fire truck songs!

It was a busy morning but the children were having lots of fun playing inside and outside. I saw some very big holes being dug in the sandpit and children enjoying playing with balls and ride-on toys.

A big thank you to our volunteer, Joanna, who helped us at playgroup this morning.

A reminder that playgroup is closed next Monday for the long weekend.

Have a great week.
Louise 🙂

We want to keep our tamariki warm in winter – but big puffy jackets, snow suits or other bulky layers are unsafe to use in child restraints. The harness needs to be as close as possible to your child’s body to be effective in a crash and layers compress, making the harness loose.

Take jackets or other outer layers off before buckling your tamariki in. You can put a blanket over the top of the harness to keep pēpi warm, or for older tamariki you can pop their jacket on backwards over the top while they’re in the car.

Did you know capsules are designed to keep pēpi on the correct angle to breathe safely while they’re in the car? That angle changes when the capsule is removed, making them unsafe for sleep.

If your child has fallen asleep on the journey, don’t leave them in the capsule – transfer them to a safe sleep space when you arrive. On long journeys it’s important to stop at least every 2 hours and take pēpi out of the capsule for a stretch and a wriggle.

If you’re not sure if your capsule, car seat or other child restraint is correctly installed, reach out to your nearest child restraint technician for advice. You can find ours on our website: https://bit.ly/4bGhEB2
