Police have recommended that people with a “safety” hidden second phone to turn it off for the duration of the test between 6 to 7pm - in case the test unintentionally exposes that phone.

Police warn those with hidden safety phones to switch them off from 6 to 7pm. 👇

⚠️ Stay alert, give heavy vehicles plenty of space, and never assume they can see you at all times.

No destination is worth your safety.

Drive and ride carefully out there.

The flooding is particularly bad in parts of Lower Hutt and Westport.

🌧️ Well the sun was fun while it lasted. Tomorrow is shaping up to be a proper wet one.

We’ve got an 🔸Orange Heavy Rain Warning🔸 in place for areas east of the Whakatāne River, from 3am to 4pm tomorrow (Sunday, 19 April).

What’s comin’ down:
☔️ Around 80-110mm of rain
⛈️ Short, heavy downpours with peak rates of 20-30mm an hour, possibly with thunderstorms, through to early Sunday afternoon
🌧️ Rain easing later in the day (allegedly)

What this could mean on the ground:
🌊 Streams and rivers rising quickly
🚗 Surface flooding and trickier driving conditions
🪨 A risk of slips

What we suggest:
🧹 Clear your drains and gutters today
🛑 Avoid low‑lying areas.
🌳 If you live near steep slopes / escarpments - remain alert for any signs of instability or movement (advice here 👉🏽 whakatane.govt.nz/escarpment )
🚘 Take it easy on the roads and allow extra time

We’ll keep you posted with any updates. Until then - stay dry, grab the remote and ya minky and enjoy a break from the chores.

Cyclone Vaianu caused significant damage across the state highways in the North Island yesterday.

Flooding, slips, and fallen trees kept roadworkers busy throughout the day yesterday.

We closed a number of roads where trees had fallen due to the extreme wind, and where there was a high risk of further trees falling.

State highways in Northland are open this morning, but we still have some state highways closed in Tairāwhiti, the Bay of Plenty, and the Coromandel.

Roadworkers inspected the closed roads this morning and they’ll be in action throughout the day clearing trees, debris, and slips to get roads back open in those affected regions.

Thank you for listening to the advice to stay home yesterday – this kept everyone safe and made cleaning up a lot easier for roadworkers – and thank you to our roadworkers for being out there in tough conditions. We very much appreciate the effort!
