For today’s Flashback Friday we’re heading 🔙 to 1959 where our friend Arthur Mead (centre) was out in the Waitākere Ranges giving a talk to members of the Auckland Historical Society. Arthur had originally been tasked with investigating possible water sources in the Waitākere Ranges, when he first gained employment at the Auckland City Council in 1910, and was sent into the ranges for survey and design work on the Upper Nihotupu and Huia Dams. After briefly going off to serve in WWI, he resumed his position with the council, working till he retired in 1953. With all his work, he certainly knew a lot about the area and would have given a fantastic talk about our dams! 💧

Etienne enjoys his gig as a plant operator during his 9-to-5. And on his weekends? He enjoys gigs of the musical kind 🎸 His work week sees him out at our Waikato and Waiuku Water Treatment Plants, where he works with his wider team to keep things running as normal 💧 As a plant operator, Etienne’s main role is overseeing the operational and compliance side of things: making sure the plant equipment and treatment processes are operating as they should 👀 While there’s always scheduled maintenance involved like cleaning the treated water tanks and physically de-sludging the clarifiers (settling tanks that separate solids from the raw water at the start of the treatment process), Etienne’s favourite part of his role is the variety that goes with it 👉 When he’s off the clock, you can find him checking out the music scene with his family, attending gigs and festivals during his time off. What can we say other than your work certainly strikes a cord, Etienne, and we’re lucky to have you on the team 👍

Did you know that a tree’s roots can extend 1.5 times the distance of an adult plant’s branches? Case and point: this picture 👀 One of our field service crew members recently attended this blockage in Kohimarama. The tree roots had been growing through this lateral connection into the sewer main and were starting to block it 🌳 And if the wastewater can’t get through to where it’s meant to go, it’ll find its way out however it can. Which we don’t want. Luckily, there is something we can do about it.

If you’re heading out in the garden this winter to do some planting, chuck your address in our GIS system first, to see where the pipes and manholes are near you, and learn the no-go planting areas on your property 👉 https://tinyurl.com/4ew9n727

If you plant your eyes there before doing the mahi, it could just save a clean-up happening on a street near you further down the track 💩

Solid work! For today’s Flashback Friday we’re heading 🔙 to 1929 when the crew here was doing work to lay the final layer of concrete at the top of the Upper Huia Dam. Rocks were crushed and used to build the Upper Huia Dam in the Waitākere Ranges, with the train bringing cement and sand to the crew, making around four round trips a day 🪨

It’s safe to say this year 13 chemistry class were in their element! 🔬 Recently our team led a tour of the Ardmore Water Treatment Plant for a group of teachers and students from Ōtahuhu College. Naturally the focus of the tour was taking a look at the chemical reactions that happen during the water treatment process 💧 One such process? Coagulation/flocculation. It happens in the settling tank, at the start of our water treatment process 👉 Smaller particles like dirt are mixed together in the water with aluminium sulphate, they begin to stick together and form a heavier larger particle called a floc. After that it’s time for the sand filter stage. The plant treats nearly two-thirds of Auckland’s water supply, and with 30 sand filters and 83 clarifiers in the mix, there was certainly a lot for the group to look at! 👀 Thanks for coming out team, we loved hosting you and hope it’s inspired your love of chemistry further 🧪

While the cold weather is slowly setting in, things aren’t cooling off when it comes to this important mahi 👉 The crew pictured here are getting stuck into hydro excavation work on Divich Avenue. It’s all so the crew can see the current underground assets and ensure the water supply won’t be affected during the upgrade 💧 Nice!
