Hello Karekare,
Please follow the advice of becoming prepared for the upcoming weather event, do what you can to tie down items that may become airborne or remove them altogether, clear out your drains and gutters to aid water flow, stock up on essential items, fuel, gas bottles, batteries, food, etc
Clear items that may become waterlogged or washed into a flooded stream. Have a plan of how you will weather the storm, do what you can to help yourself or neighbours prepare, and keep in touch with your neighbours before, during and after the event
Ultimately, the best place to weather a storm is in your home; generally, you will be able to keep warm and sheltered from the natural elements. Safety is key. If, however, in the event you have to leave your home and you will be sheltering elsewhere, please leave a notice on your main door if possible. (A permanent marker on a piece of plastic or wood or on the door itself will allow us to establish that you are safe, and where you will be located.)
Your Karekare Fire Brigade is currently preparing for what lies ahead and will be ready to turn out in an emergency. We have personnel in the valley with equipment, and a crew available in Upper Karekare
Please call 111 in an emergency, but for minor events such as a tree across the road or your driveway ( not harming anyone or any property), please hold off on the emergency call.
Reminder... an emergency is when there is a threat to life, an injured person/s or a threat to property (a tree onto a home, land slips or erosion threatens the stability of the home)
All in all, if you need help and it is serious, please call 111
