Join us for a special behind the scenes tour as part of the Auckland Heritage Festival to visit parts of Highwic the public don’t usually get to see and see some special objects normally in storage.

Starting with a cup of tea and freshly made scones, staff will introduce the fascinating history of Highwic and the Buckland family, who lived here from the 1860s through until the 1970s, and then lead you on a tour of the house bringing to light the unique stories and objects on display, including two of the handwritten recipe books owned by the family, dating from the late 1800s.

This tour, limited to 12 people, will include information about the family and architecture, along with highlights from the art and decorative art collections.

A portrait you could hold in the palm of your hand. 🖼️

European portrait miniatures first appeared in royal courts in the 16th century, before becoming hugely fashionable in the 1700s. Originally painted in watercolour on vellum (a type of primed, translucent calf skin) later ivory became the preferred surface partly for its luminous glow.

Displayed in the Highwic morning room, these miniature portraits served as diplomatic gifts, tokens of love and treasured mementoes, and were even worn as jewelry. With the arrival of photography, their popularity faded. Today, only a handful of artists continue this wonderfully intricate tradition.

Step back in time and spend a relaxing day exploring botanical watercolour painting at the beautiful heritage setting of Highwic, where art and gardens come together.

Through easy nature journaling techniques, you'll learn to observe more closely, draw with confidence and discover the basics of colour mixing and watercolour. Weather permitting, we'll work in the traditional cottage gardens, drawing inspiration from seasonal plants in much the same way botanical artists have done for centuries. Materials are supplied and no experience is necessary, just bring your curiosity and enjoy the day.

Jennifer Duval-Smith is a botanical artist and very experienced teacher based in Tāmaki Makaurau. Previously ‘Friends Visiting Artist’ at Auckland Botanic Gardens, and currently working in residence at the Auckland Wintergardens.

Just five tickets left for Dr. Julia Gatley's talk "Modern Heritage: A Thing since the 1980s" at Highwic this Saturday, 2pm !

Looking at a selection of fascinating modernist New Zealand buildings, DOCOMOMO chairperson, Julia Gatley will discuss the work of the organisation and developments in recognising modern heritage. DOCOMOMO is the international working party for the documentation and conservation of buildings, sites and neighbourhoods of the ‘Modern Movement’ and is the most significant non-governmental organisation devoted to the history, preservation and reassessment of modern architecture.

Julia Gatley is an architectural historian and deputy head of the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of Auckland. She is editor of Long Live the Modern: New Zealand’s New Architecture, 1904-1984 and a co-author of Architectural Conservation in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands: National Experiences and Practice.

The New Zealand Heritage List/Rārangi Kōrero, tells the story of Aotearoa New Zealand through the identification of our most significant historical and cultural heritage across the country.

Heritage Assessment Advisor Alexandra Foster will explore how the histories we recognise through listing are expanding, and the exciting direction being proposed to guide the future of the List.

Alexandra has worked for Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga for over 10 years’ researching places for the New Zealand Heritage List/Rārangi Kōrero.
