Grandparents & Special Whānau Morning at Edendale

What a wonderful morning at Edendale Primary School as we welcomed many of our grandparents and special whānau into our school today!

It was a beautiful opportunity for our tamariki to share a special connection with the important people in their lives, spend time together, and give our whānau a glimpse into their learning environment.

At Edendale, we believe that strong relationships and connections are at the heart of learning. By inviting our whānau into school, we create opportunities to build meaningful relationships, strengthen our sense of belonging, and celebrate the people who support and nurture our children.

This is our third successful year celebrating Grandparents & Special Whānau Morning, and it continues to be a very special event in our Edendale calendar.

A huge thank you to all our grandparents and special whānau who took the time to join us. Your presence means so much to our tamariki and helps make our school community stronger.

We are incredibly proud to share some exciting news from Edendale Primary School!

Our two Tournament of Minds teams competed at the Regional Finals on Saturday, 29 August at Diocesan School, with one team participating in The Arts category and the other in Social Sciences.

We are thrilled to announce that both teams won First Place in their categories!

This means our talented students will now represent Edendale Primary School at the Tournament of Minds New Zealand National Final, taking place in Wellington on Saturday, 12 September 2026.

A huge thank you to:
• Jamie for the time, guidance and commitment in working with our teams
• Shamin and Lisa for giving their time to serve as judges at the Regional Finals
• Our incredible parents for their ongoing support, time and commitment
• And, of course, our amazing students for their creativity, collaboration, problem-solving and perseverance

We are so proud of what our tamariki have achieved.

Coffee Catch-Up Update

Unfortunately, tomorrow’s Monthly Coffee Catch-Up has been cancelled due to illness.

However, if you were looking forward to a morning coffee and a chat, our school coffee cart will still be open! ☕️

So please pop along, grab yourself a $5 coffee and enjoy a catch-up with other members of our community.

Today our staff came together for a Staff Only Day to begin unpacking the new Science and Social Sciences curriculum documents.

The day focused on developing a shared understanding of the curriculum phases, the progression of knowledge, and what this means for planning and teaching across Years 1–6. These refreshed curriculum documents provide greater clarity about what students should know and be able to do, supporting schools to design coherent, knowledge-rich learning experiences.

The afternoon shifted from theory to practice, with our STEAM kaiako, Jamie, leading year-level teams through a range of engaging, hands-on science investigations that can be implemented in classrooms. It was fantastic to see teachers exploring practical ways to bring scientific thinking to life while aligning with the intent of the new curriculum.

A huge thank you to Mellini and Lawrence, our Ministry of Education Curriculum Leads, for facilitating such a well-designed and engaging introduction to these important curriculum changes. Your expertise and practical guidance have given us a strong foundation as we continue this journey.

Professional learning is most powerful when it builds both confidence and curiosity. We are excited about the opportunities these new curriculum documents present and, most importantly, what they will mean for the learning experiences of our students.

Welcome to Edendale, Rasoul

We are delighted to introduce Rasoul, our new school caretaker, who will be joining the Edendale team from Monday 24 August.

Rasoul will be a familiar face around our school and grounds, helping us look after the many things that keep Edendale running smoothly each day.

We know our tamariki, staff and whānau will introduce themselves and give Rasoul a warm Edendale welcome as he settles into his new role and becomes part of both our school and the wider Sandringham community.

Nau mai, haere mai, Rasoul. We’re very pleased to have you joining our team.

Learning Through Visual Art

At Edendale Primary School, we know that learning happens in many different ways and across many different settings.

Our Art Specialist, Kus, recently worked with Room 10 and their teacher, Adrienne, as our Year 1 and 2 learners explored visual art through tracing and painting large geometric shapes.

This experience supported much more than artistic expression. As children traced lines and curves, they were developing hand-eye coordination, muscle control, grip strength and spatial awareness. Painting with a brush required them to carefully control pressure, movement, paint and strokes.

The opportunity to manipulate different tools also strengthens finger dexterity and fine motor skills, which are important foundations for learning in the classroom.

Our specialist programmes are an important part of our diverse curriculum at Edendale. They provide our learners with opportunities to develop creativity, confidence and practical skills while making meaningful connections across areas of learning.

Today we launched our Mathathon 2026 fundraiser at our whole-school assembly, and our tamariki are excited to get started!

For the next five weeks (10 August – 11 September), students will be practising maths skills and basic facts appropriate to their learning level while raising funds to help us renovate the rest of our school playground. After the success of our tubular slide project, we are looking forward to creating an even better space for our children to play, explore, and connect.

A huge thank you to our wonderful whānau and community for your ongoing support. Every donation helps us improve our school environment and supports our tamariki to thrive.
