Habitat for Humanity New Zealand

Habitat for Humanity New Zealand "A world where everyone has a decent place to live." Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to bring people together to build homes, communities and hope.

Our philosophy is “a hand up, not a hand-out.” We work in partnership with families in need of decent and affordable housing to make positive and lasting change. By helping to build, renovate and preserve homes, and serve communities through our wide range of programmes, Habitat for Humanity works towards a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

This National Volunteer Week we’re celebrating the incredible volunteers who give their time, skills and energy to help build stronger communities across Aotearoa.

Every day, Habitat volunteers show up in different ways - sewing curtains to create warmer homes, giving their time at our op-shop ReStores that supports our mission, building overseas with Global Village and helping spread the message about the importance of safe, affordable housing.

No matter how they get involved, every volunteer helps build something bigger: homes, connection, opportunity and hope.

Today, and every day, we thank our volunteers for being part of a movement working towards a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

Thank you for standing by our side. 💙

Manuia le Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa.

This Samoan Language Week, we're celebrating the voices and experiences of the communities we work alongside in Samoa.

For Atina'e, a safe community shelter means families living close to the sea have a place to turn when disasters strike.

Through community-led planning and resilience initiatives, delivered in partnership with ADRA Samoa, villages are identifying local solutions that help protect children, older people, people with disabilities and future generations.

Together, we're building safer, stronger communities.

This World Environment Day, we’re reminded that climate resilience starts with communities.

Across the Pacific, families are already adapting to the realities of changing weather patterns and more severe storms.

At Habitat for Humanity, we work alongside communities in Fiji, Samoa and Tonga to strengthen resilience ahead of cyclone season through safer building practices, reliable water access and evacuation centre projects that support families during emergencies.

Because preparedness starts long before disaster strikes.

Manuia le Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa.

This Samoan Language Week, we're celebrating the voices, stories and knowledge of the communities we work alongside in Samoa.

For Meresaini, the skills gained through Build Back Safer and Basic Home Plumbing training delivered in partnership with ADRA Samoa didn't end when the workshops finished. She has gone on to use those skills to support her community, helping maintain the Women's Committee house in Salesatele, Samoa.

Every skill learned, every problem solved and every act of service helps build stronger, more resilient communities.

A safe, affordable home is more than four walls. It’s the foundation for learning, opportunity, stability and the future families build from there.

After taking care of loved ones, some choose to extend their impact, helping families they may never meet, but whose futures will be shaped by safe, stable housing.

Climate resilience starts long before disaster strikes.

Across Fiji, Samoa and Tonga, Habitat for Humanity works alongside local communities to strengthen resilience ahead of cyclone season. This includes:
- Sharing practical building techniques through our Build Back Safer programme, helping community members strengthen homes and roofs against extreme winds.
- Installing reliable and safe water sources, meaning families are self-reliant and less affected by infrastructure and pipe damage caused by extreme weather.
- Working with communities to establish evacuation centre projects, which not only provide a safe haven for families who need to leave their homes in an emergency, but they’re also used as community hubs to easily distribute shelter materials and urgent supplies.

These community-led solutions help families better withstand extreme weather, recover faster and access the support they need during difficult times.

Because when communities are prepared, they’re better equipped for what comes next.

With construction moving at pace, with an estimated late 2026 completion, the next stage of works will see frames erected, mid floors craned into place, and roofing installed over the coming weeks.

Because opportunity starts with a home.
