🌱 We are incredibly grateful and excited to have been selected as one of six disability-led projects to receive funding through the Disability-Led Climate Adaptation Pilot.

This funding is so much more than an investment in our garden—it is an investment in creating more inclusive, accessible and climate-resilient community spaces.

At Dig It! Community Garden, we'll be using this opportunity not only to enhance our own garden experience for disabled people, but also to develop a practical resource that can be shared with community gardens across Tāmaki Makaurau and Aotearoa. Our hope is that it will help other gardens and help design spaces and programmes that genuinely welcome and include disabled people.

A huge thank you to Auckland Council, Foundation North, and our umbrella organisation, CCS Disability Action, for believing in our vision and supporting this important kaupapa.

We can't wait to get started and share our journey with you all! 💚

You may have seen the recent RNZ story about a farmer offering to pay for a lift, so a dad doesn't have to carry his disabled daughter up the steps to their front door.

While an incredibly generous act, it raises the question: why was this necessary in the first place?

Housing is a human right. The UNCRPD requires housing and public facilities to be physically accessible. Yet whānau can't get the modifications they are entitled to because of capped funding.

"Private generosity should never be expected to plug structural gaps in under‑resourced public systems. When we normalise that expectation, we reinforce an outdated charitable model of disability – one that treats access as a favour rather than a right."

Even though the daffodils were a bit confused, the kumara stuck to to the job at hand. A week ago we harvested some of our kumara. After a week in the shed, they were dry enough to share out with our volunteers. We saved a couple that were large, healthy and sprouting to grow new slips (tipu) for the next season.

This coming week, we're going to make kumara chips and reuben sandwiches with homemade pickles, sauerkraut and fresh baked bread.

We have had a few new people volunteering of late so it will be good to have a wee sit down together over shared kai. If you would like to be a part of our garden, feel free to come for a visit so you can see what we do.
