Auckland Town Hall Organ

Auckland Town Hall Organ The Norman and Beard organ was built in 1909/10 and installed in 1911 when the hall was opened.

In 2010 a new instrument was built by Orgelbau Klais of Bonn, Germany, retaining the original front of the organ and 8 of the original 84 stops.

We are excited to share the details of our first concert for 2026, at 2pm on 10 May.

The organist is young Hong Kong star Eric Chan who will present some of the organ’s great (and most difficult) repertoire, such as Liszt’s Prelude and Fugue on the name B-A-C-H and Bach’s ‘Dorian’ Prelude and Fugue.

Also making the journey to Auckland is one of the world’s leading Suona players, Yazhi Guo. He will play this traditional Chinese instrument accompanied by the organ.

Eric and Yazhi recently completed an extensive European tour with their exciting programme.

Keep an eye out on our page for when tickets become available!

A huge congratulations to Zosia Herlihy-O'Brien on being selected as the Royal Albert Hall's inaugural Organ Scholar!

Zosia is well-known in Auckland's music scene and has performed on the Auckland Town Hall Organ previously. You may also recognise her as a former Concertmaster of the Auckland Youth Orchestra, playing violin for the AYO's 2022 performance of the Saint-Saëns Organ Symphony, which featured Town Hall Organ Trustee Nicholas Forbes on the organ.

As a multi-instrumentalist she's received numerous accolades and it comes as no surprise to hear she's been granted this incredible opportunity.

Congratulations, Zosia!

Congratulations to New Zealand musician Zosia Herlihy-O’Brien who has been selected as one of the "first ever" Organ Scholars at the Royal Albert Hall.

The year-long scholarship, commencing in 2026 and led by Organist of the Royal Albert Hall, Anna Lapwood MBE, aims to advance a young organist's key skills including performance style and communication.

Zosia moved to the UK to study a Master of Music at the Royal Academy of Music, specialising in organ, violin and conducting and is now the resident organist of the Charterhouse.

In 2023, Zosia was the recipient of the Maxwell Fernie Dame Malvina Major Foundation Award, that supports young keyboard artists to further their education or training in the organ.

A look back at a special moment from earlier this year: The Graduate Choir New Zealand rehearsing for our May Organ Concert Series performance. This collaborative concert featuring organists James Flores and Soomin Kim brought Brahms, Bach, Antognini, Howells, and more to life in the Auckland Town Hall.

We’re grateful for the artistry they shared with us and the audience who joined for such a memorable afternoon.

In September, organist Christopher Wrench facilitated a Masterclass on the Auckland Town Hall Organ with young organ players from around the country. All of them had the opportunity to present something from their repertoire and receive feedback directly from Christopher. The Town Hall Organ Trust hopes to arrange similar events in the future with other visiting organists.

A moment to savour: conductor Antony Hermus at the Town Hall organ, exclaiming “incredible” the first time he sampled this magnificent instrument.

Hermus, the Dutch-born conductor known for his dynamic opera and orchestral work, is Chief Conductor of the Belgian National Orchestra, and Principal Guest Conductor of Opera North in the UK, among other roles.

We’re delighted to share this image from earlier in the year - a reminder of how this great instrument inspires even the most seasoned musicians.

Organists often take great care with the socks they choose to wear when performing, knowing they'll likely be on display for all the audience to see.

A member of Sooyoung Choi's audience made sure he had a Kiwi connection by presenting him with socks to remember his visit following his wonderful performance on the Auckland Town Hall Organ in July.

We spotted some great socks on the great Indra Hughes during his performance yesterday, too!
