🚧 Update: Glenvar Road & East Coast Road Safety Improvements

This is one of the most important transport safety projects for our area, and after a lengthy pause, I'm pleased to share that progress is continuing.

Since the project was paused following the 2023 Auckland Anniversary floods, Auckland Transport has been refining the design. The latest changes focus on reducing impacts on residential driveways, improving outcomes for cyclists, and addressing changes as a result of the Glenvar Road slip site.

The project scope on East Coast Road is from Northcross lights (950 East Coast Road up to 1050 East Coast Road). On Glenvar Road, the scope is from 981 East Coast Road to 14 Ashley Avenue. This includes:

🔹Glenvar Road, East Coast Road and Lonely Track Road intersection upgrades
🔹East Coast Road and Glamorgan Drive intersection footpath improvements along East Coast Road, including the intersections
🔹transit lanes to improve congestion through the corridor
🔹cycle lanes and shared paths in certain areas along the route
🔹other safety improvements such as crossings on both East Coast Road and Glenvar Road.

The revised designs will be presented to the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board in September before Auckland Transport engages with affected property owners, key stakeholders and then the wider community later this year.

With significant growth in Long Bay and the surrounding suburbs, East Coast Road now carries up to 25,000 vehicles every day. The project aims to improve safety, reduce congestion and create better travel options for everyone using the corridor.

We have all been waiting a long time to see this project move forward. Whilst it might have seemed quite on the outside, i've continued to advocate over and over again for 7 years now to ensure it remains prioritised and funded, against other projects, via the Regional Land Transport Plan every time that funding document has come up for review.

While there's still a little bit of work to do before construction can begin, it's encouraging to see it progressing again. I'll continue to keep you updated as we move towards public consultation and the final design.
