We are very sad to hear of the passing peacefully this morning of our friend and colleague Kevin Jones. He was a much valued and respected member of the archaeological community, and great fun at conferences, even if he totally loved to take the p**s out of Hans. RIP Kevin. Arohanui.

One of the discoveries underneath the 1940s state houses (blue features) in Taamaki Makaurau: a small seasonal site with a small whare wedged into a basalt outcrop, fireplaces, shell midden and post holes (probably fences and bases for a simple pataka). The floor of the whare was made from consolidated, re-used shell midden. The site is overlooking a small gully where we found plenty of remnants of made Maori gardening soil. So the oral traditions for the area were quite accurate......
