Have you seen Sam?

Police are asking for the public’s help finding Sam Newton-Jones, who has been reported missing from west Auckland.

The 33-year-old was last seen yesterday at his workplace in Henderson, and his vehicle was later located at the Mercer Bay Loop carpark near Piha.

Police are seeking information from anyone who may have seen Sam walking on the track or in the Piha area yesterday afternoon or evening.

Sam also visited Mercer Bay Loop on the morning of the 19th of October.

Members of the public may have noticed him in the area on that day, and we would like to hear from them.

Sam is approximately 185cm tall and wears glasses. He was last known to be wearing a white shirt, black pants, and black sneakers.

If you have seen Sam, or have any information on his whereabouts, please call 105 and reference 261020/5431.

Today (1 October 2026), 4 new road rules have become law. Here's what they are:

The new rules aim to make travel safer and better reflect how people already use the roads.
From today, 1 October:
• Children 12 years old and younger can now ride their bikes on the footpath. Parents and caregivers are now also allowed to ride with. Keep an eye out for kids on bikes when entering or leaving driveways.
• You’ll now be able to ride your e-scooter in cycle lanes. This means e-scooter riders can get where they’re going more efficiently. Reminder: the speed limit still applies to e-scooters, and we highly recommend wearing a helmet when riding.
• There’s now a minimum passing gap of 1.5m when passing people riding bikes, horses or e-scooters that are travelling in your lane and heading the same direction as you. This only applies to people driving motor vehicles or riding motorbikes. The 1.5m passing gap doesn’t apply to parked cars or people travelling in a different lane. If it’s not safe to pass, you’ll need to wait and pass when it is.
• Everyone is now required to give way to buses that’re signalling that they’re leaving bus stops, the roadside or bus lanes on roads that’re 60km/h or less. This new rule lets buses safely re-enter traffic.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, you should make helmets compulsory on bikes and e-scooters, just like life jackets are now compulsory on water.

Fresh SEEK data released at 5pm yesterday shows Auckland job advertisements rose 1.0% in August and were 5.0% higher than a year earlier. Growth was strongest in hospitality and manufacturing, transport and logistics. Technology hiring was softer, but AI skills are increasingly appearing in job advertisements.

A great day for Auckland, and good to be at Swanson Train Station with my West Harbour Community Patrol - CPNZ and Community Patrol - Ranui / Swanson / Waitakere, West Auckland colleagues for the opening of the City Rail Link.

After years of work, the CRL is finally open. For West Aucklanders, it means better connections across the city and more options for getting around.

I was there doing my small part to help people feel safe and supported as they used the new network.

I hope our community makes the most of it, enjoys the improved connections, and feels safe while travelling.

Good to see a major Auckland project finally up and running.

22 years of collecting for , and it still feels personal every year.

Thank you to everyone who stopped, donated and shared a few words today. Some people told me about family members or friends who have faced cancer. Others spoke about people they have lost.

Over the years, I have seen how cancer can turn a family’s life upside down. That is why Daffodil Day matters. Every donation helps support people when they need it most.

Better late than never.

The speed table ramp in the Glen Eden town centre, on the intersection of West Coast Road and Glendale Road, is being modified after complaints of vehicle damage to suspensions and broken engine mounts.

A resident group in a West Auckland suburb is fuming over the wasted tax and ratepayer money being spent to modify a new speed table ramp that was part of a million dollar project five years ago.
