Waitangi Day is here, and it’s traditionally one of the busiest times of the year on the water.

Last Waitangi weekend, we hit a record number of bar‑crossing Trip Reports - will Aotearoa beat it this year?

As we come together to reflect on Te Tiriti o Waitangi and enjoy time with friends and whānau, our Operations Centre is already seeing a surge in Trip Reports - a great sign that boaties are planning ahead before they head out.

If you’re joining the crowds on the moana today, remember:
🦺 Always wear a lifejacket.
📲 Log your trip using the free Coastguard App or by VHF radio.
📞 Take two forms of waterproof communication — VHF, a fully charged mobile phone, or a beacon (PLB or EPIRB).
☁️ Check the marine weather before you go and while you’re out.

Stay safe and have a great Waitangi Day.

Hari te Rā o Waitangi.

Christmas on the water? 🎅 The best gift you can give your whānau is getting home safely – lifejackets on, gear checked, and plans shared.

And while many are unwrapping gifts today and having a good feed, some of our incredible volunteers are ready to ditch their pavlova and leave their presents behind to respond if needed.

❤️ From all of us at Coastguard – Meri Kirihimete (Merry Christmas), and stay safe!

Great work all

Great work all

A great outcome on the Manukau Harbour tonight 💙

Just after 6:30pm, New Zealand Police contacted our Coastguard National Operations Centre requesting assistance in the search for an overdue scuba diver in the Waiuku Channel, Manukau Harbour, after his diving buddies raised the alarm when they lost sight of him.

Waiuku Coastguard volunteers were on the water aboard' NZ Steel Rescue' within 35 minutes, joined shortly after by 'Joe Hawke Rescue' from Papakura Coastguard, working alongside the Police Eagle helicopter.

At 7:49pm, Eagle spotted the diver around 1.6km from his last known position. Our Waiuku crew navigated the shallow waters to reach him, bringing him safely onboard for a quick assessment before transporting him to shore to meet Police and Hato Hone St John.

We’re pleased to share that the diver was in good spirits when found. A huge thank you to everyone involved - and especially our incredible Coastguard Waiuku and Papakura volunteers - for an outstanding team effort and a very happy ending 🙌

We had a tasking this evening which we receive on an app called Active 911. This is an example of the info we initially receive. Usually we will receive more detail as the task unfolds.

Hi locals. Just a reminder that we will be at Laingholm Fishing Club today from 2:30 pm doing a short presentation and update for anyone interested. We will also have our brand new JetSkis (Huia Rescue 1 & 2) parked out front. Members and non members welcome. The bar will be open and sausages on the bbq!

Say kia ora to the newest additions of our rescue fleet – two jetskis now based with Titirangi Volunteer Coastguard!

These fast, agile machines are designed to handle the tricky shallow waters and sandbanks of the Manukau Harbour and Bar – areas where larger vessels can struggle. They’ll help volunteers reach people faster, especially when every second counts.

With incidents on the rise, these jetskis are a smart investment – bringing our national rescue watercraft (jetski) fleet to 17 and boosting our ability to respond swiftly across Aotearoa.

Coastguard Titirangi, along with Papakura Coastguard and Waiuku Coastguard, play a vital role in keeping people safe on the Manukau. A huge thanks to the Titirangi crew for expanding our on-water capability in this challenging and important area. 💪

Training is underway, and the crew will be rescue-ready later this year.

If you spot them on the water, give our crew a wave! 👋

As strong winds are hitting Northland and Auckland this afternoon and for the next few days, we advise all boaties AND kite surfers, kayakers, and paddleboarders – whatever your waka – to stay home and avoid the water! Waves of up to 5.5m are being recorded in some areas and will continue into Saturday 🌊 ⚠️
• Stay off the water. There will be plenty more good days to get out there!
• Keep monitoring the weather forecast at www.metservice.com/marine
• Take extra care near coastlines and beaches.

📡🌴A low, currently located near Vanuatu, is forecast to deepen and move quickly southwards, to be centred to the northwest of Northland by midnight Wednesday.

🌬️ 🌊A belt of easterly gales, around the deepening low, will pulse large and powerful swells onto the north and northeast of the North Island on Thursday 17th, and Good Friday 18th April.

⛵ Be mindful of the high tide times, for biggest coastal impacts.
