Every Reader Has A Story … What’s Yours?

Books can stay with us long after we've turned the final page. They can inspire us to take action, make us laugh, or bring us joy. Sometimes they make us feel understood. Sometimes they open a door into a new world, a new idea, or a new way of seeing ourselves.

How has a book helped change you?

To help celebrate the first-ever NZ Children’s Books Week, Kiwi Christmas Books is inviting you, the keen young readers of Aotearoa, to tell us a true story about how a book made a difference in your life.

You could win $250 in books for yourself, plus $500 in books for your school and have your story published!

• Entries must be received by 10pm, Sunday 2nd August 2026

For more info and a link to the entry form see:

Calling all budding writers!

It's all go ...

Every Reader Has a Story is a creative writing competition for young readers and writers from Year 5 to Year 13.

We want to know what makes books great. Which books moved you? Which stories or characters changed the way you saw the world?

You could win $250 worth of books for yourself, and $500 worth of books for your school AND have your story published in The Sapling.

We're also offering a FREE online masterclass with award-winning author and University of Auckland creative writing lecturer Dr Paula Morris on 21 July to help budding writers hone their skills.

The competition will be judged by editor, book reviewer and award-winning author Claire Mabey.

Entries close Sunday 2 August 2026.
