On Saturday we were joined by almost 200 people from community-led emergency hubs and resilience groups, organisations, local board members and councillors, marae, emergency agency partners and volunteers at our second Community Civil Defence Emergency Management forum in Manukau.

This year’s theme was ‘Rhythms of readiness – stronger together in emergencies’, 💪 provided a fantastic opportunity for people to kōrero and network, collectively building on our emergency preparedness and learning from one another.

Civil defence is all about community. The people who step-up, providing support, shelter, practical help, a cup of tea, kai and aroha to people who may be going through the worst day of their lives. ❤️‍🩹

So a huge thank you to all our attendees, presenters and partners who took time to join us and continue building our emergency management capability. 🤩

The National Emergency Management Agency's 'Get Ready' schools challenge is a great way to help our tamariki get prepared for when emergencies happen - and there's an iPad up for grabs!

The Get Ready Schools Challenge is back for 2026!

We've worked with the Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake, Fire and Emergency NZ, New Zealand Police, Hato Hone St John, and Wellington Free Ambulance to create eight new fun and engaging activities to help our tamariki be prepared:

⬇️ Learn and practise how to Drop, Cover and Hold.
📱 Know their important phone numbers and addresses.
🔎 Spot the difference to find items that have been fixed and fastened for an earthquake.
📖 Learn what different organisations do in an emergency.
✏️ Complete a New Zealand hazards word search.
🎨 Draw a hazard that could impact where they live.
🧯 Create a home fire escape plan.
🧭 Solve a maze to get out of a tsunami evacuation zone.

Plus, your child could win an iPad for taking part - but only if their school signs up at https://confirmsubscription.com/h/d/9360610768C7DC5C

It’s NZ Sign Language (NZSL) Week — and 20 years since NZSL became an official language in Aotearoa New Zealand!

Nearly 25,000 people use NZSL, so knowing even a few signs can make a real difference in an emergency.

To get started, check out the "Let's talk - 25 Signs to Learn for Emergencies" booklet from Deaf Aotearoa, NZ Civil Defence and Auckland Emergency Management.

It's a simple, practical way to help people communicate more clearly when it matters most.

Take a look, share it with your whānau and colleagues to help make emergency situations safer and more inclusive for everyone 💛

Hands up if you live or work in a high-rise building? 🙋‍♀️

Thousands of people across Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland spend time in apartments and high-rise buildings (he whare teitei). If that’s you, it’s worth considering what you would do if an emergency hits.

Make a plan that includes:

🏃‍♀️‍➡️Your evacuation route if you need to leave
🥫Emergency supplies like food, water and essential medication if you get stuck
🤝Connecting with neighbours
😲And an important practical one – what to do when nature calls if wastewater services are disrupted for a while!

You can find lots of advice about this (including how to make a temporary emergency toilet just-in-case 🧻) on AEM's website ➡️

23/04/2026

As another round of forecast rain and possible thunderstorms (see our pinned post) hits our region, here’s a timely reminder that landslides can happen with little warning. So stay alert and look out for the warning signs.

And while we’ve had a few clear days for that last deluge to soak away, soil moisture across the region remains high and our waterways are also running a little higher than normal.

If you see any of the following signs of a landslide, act quickly:

📍Small slips, rock falls, and sinking land, at the top or bottom of slopes.
📍Sticking doors and window frames, which may mean the land is slowly moving under the building.
📍Gaps where window frames are not fitting properly.
📍Steps, decks, and verandas, moving or tilting away from the rest of the building.
📍New cracks or bulges on the ground, road, footpath, retaining walls and other hard surfaces.
📍Tilting trees, retaining walls, or fences.

Get out of the path of the landslide quickly. Evacuate if the building you are in is in danger and phone 111.

Stay safe everyone.
