Happy Labour Day

Did you know? Labour Day has a long history in New Zealand, dating back to the campaign for an eight-hour working day.

In 1840, carpenter Samuel Parnell championed the idea that a day should be divided into eight hours for work, eight for sleep, and eight for rest and recreation. His efforts helped establish the eight-hour working day as a tradition in New Zealand.

The first Labour Day celebrations took place in 1890, with thousands of workers and supporters joining parades across the country. In 1899, Labour Day became an official public holiday, and since 1910, it has been observed on the fourth Monday of October.

Today, Labour Day is a chance to recognise the history of workers’ rights and enjoy a well-deserved break.

Whether it’s a walk along the waterfront, a coffee in the sunshine or a relaxing afternoon by the beach, we hope you enjoy the long weekend.
