Tomorrow, between 12pm and 1pm, members of the New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union will be stopping work for one hour.

We will continue to answer 111 fire calls. Volunteer stations in the affected cities and towns will respond, as they regularly do when there are multiple emergencies.

If you are at home, do not leave cooking unattended. Make sure you have working smoke alarms in every bedroom, hallway, and living area.

If there is a fire, get out, stay out, and call 111.

If you are at work, know your building evacuation plan. If there is a fire or the fire alarm sounds, exit the building, assemble at your safe meeting place and call 111.

If you are on a job site that uses spark or heat generating tools, we ask you to refrain from using these tools during this hour.

It is important to acknowledge that this strike action will not affect the parts of the country served by our volunteers.

The fire in this rubbish truck was caused by a lithium-ion battery that was incorrectly disposed of in general rubbish. When batteries are crushed or damaged during collection and transport, they can ignite quickly, putting truck drivers, collection crews, and the public at risk.

𝗡𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘂𝗺-𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝘂𝗯𝗯𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗶𝗻𝘀.

Lithium-ion batteries can be safely recycled at:
✅ Battery recycling bins at Bunnings or Mitre 10
✅ An Auckland Council Refuse and Recycling Transfer Station

- Brush your teeth

- Make a bag of microwave popcorn

Three minutes feels like a moment. In a fire, it can be the difference between getting out safely and not.

To give yourself enough time to escape, make sure you have:

✅ Working smoke alarms in every bedroom, hallway, living area and on every level of your home
✅ An escape plan that everyone knows and has practiced
✅ A safe meeting place where everyone will gather outside

Smoke alarms give you the early warning. An escape plan tells you what to do. Make sure your household has both.

While the household slept, hot fireplace ashes in an outdoor rubbish bin led to a fire that destroyed their shed.

Fireplace ash can stay hot for up to 5 days.

Before you bin it:
✅ Store it in a metal bucket
✅ Soak it thoroughly
✅ Keep it away from buildings

Don't let yesterday's fire start tomorrow's.
