Another Fire in our Neighbourhood 🔥🚒
What you're watching is a lithium-ion battery rupturing in a nail salon during unattended charging. Here are some things you can do to help avoid situations like these:
🔋Do not overcharge your batteries. When your item is fully charged, disconnect it from the charger.
🔋Charge devices in a well ventilated area on a hard flat surface.
🔋Only use chargers and batteries supplied with the device, or certified third-party charging equipment compatible with the battery specifications (same voltage and current).

5pm: Motorists on the Upper Harbour Motorway between Westgate and Brigham Creek may notice smoke from a vegetation fire burning in the Trigg Road area. We have a large number of firetrucks and firefighters responding in the area. Please drive cautiously.

Tomorrow, between 12pm and 1pm, members of the New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union will be stopping work for one hour.

We will continue to answer 111 fire calls.

Volunteer stations in the affected cities and towns will respond, as they regularly do when there are multiple emergencies.

If you are at home, do not leave cooking unattended. Make sure you have working smoke alarms in every bedroom, hallway, and living area.

If there is a fire, get out, stay out, and call 111.

If you are at work, know your building evacuation plan.

If there is a fire or the fire alarm sounds, exit the building, assemble at your safe meeting place and call 111.

If you are on a job site that uses spark or heat generating tools, we ask you to refrain from using these tools during this hour.

It is important to acknowledge that this strike action will not affect the parts of the country served by our volunteers.

Batteries were linked to around 11 fires at Auckland's recycling facility and 17 rubbish and recycling truck fires in the past year. Today is International E-waste Day and a good time to remind Aucklanders to correctly recycle their lithium-ion batteries. When batteries are crushed or damaged during collection and transport, they can ignite quickly, putting truck drivers, collection crews, firefighters, and the public at risk. Whether it's an old mobile phone, laptop, chargers, power tools or rechargeable battery, the best place for them is with a specialist reuse or recycling service, NOT in your kerbside rubbish or recycling bin. If a device or battery starts to smoke or emit flames:
🔥Evacuate immediately and close doors (if safe) to slow the spread of fire.
🚒Once in a safe location, call 111 and wait for firefighters to arrive.
⚠Ensure no one goes back inside the building for any reason. Battery gases, vapour and smoke are highly toxic and flammable and must not be inhaled.
