A big mihi to Samantha Gee from RNZ, who has written an excellent story which presents the facts about the damage to Kowhai Pa and the sentencing last Friday.

Montford Corporation Limited was fined $55,250 for modifying or damaging land near the Wairau Bar - one of the most significant archaeological sites in Aotearoa.

And there you go. We wait 4 years for this to finally reach the court for a measy $55,000 dollar fine. For the offending company, this is merely another slap on the wrist. Name suppression continued.

Our wahi tapu will continue to be desecrated by an ineffective Pouhere Taonga act.

This is a great story by Maia Hart of the Marlborough Express.
The reality is that Kōwhai Pā belongs to a series of early sites along the coastal region of the Wairau that are connected Te Pokohiwi-a-Kupe.

While we hold pākeha to account for their lack of respect for our tikanga and traditions in the past, we must hold our own people to account for their blatantly irresponsible actions of today.

What happened to the investigation being conducted by Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga in regards to this site earlier this year? Has it been dropped?

What are the Rangitāne o Wairau Trustees doing to hold their fellow Trustee to task over his direct actions associated with damage done by planting vineyards at Kōwhai Pā.

It has been a while since this page has been updated but I would like to inform you all that after many months of ongoing requests, the Trustees of Te Rūnanga a Rangitāne o Wairau, have finally agreed to meet with their beneficiaries in regards to what has happened at Kowhai Pā.

The meeting will take place at 3pm, next Tuesday 25th at Ūkaipō.

Any iwi members who have any questions about this kaupapa are encouraged to attend this meeting.
