Marlborough Road Safety

Marlborough Road Safety This is a regional (Marlborough) road safety educational programme, funded by the New Zealand Transport Agency & Marlborough District Council.

Road Safety Coordinators are appointed by councils throughout the country to deliver road safety promotion activities and education programmes on a regional level. This work is carried out in Marlborough under the Marlborough Road Safety identity. In addition to supporting the NZ Government's Safer Journeys 2010-2020 Strategy and a vision for a safe transport system, Marlborough Road Safety seeks

to have an impact on the behaviour of anyone who uses the road, be it state highway, urban roads or footpaths, to ensure Marlborough can have a safe and sustainable transport network. Marlborough Road Safety works closely in partnership with the NZ Police, ACC, the NZ Transport Agency, and Marlborough Roads to promote road safety in our region. The NZ Transport Agency and the Marlborough District Council jointly fund Marlborough Road Safety and its programme of activities. Go to Council’s website - marlborough.govt.nz to find out more about Marlborough Road Safety.

There have been 21 fatal or serious injury motorcycle crashes in Marlborough over the past 5 years at an estimated social cost of $million 28.97. Over half of the motorcycle crashes involved another vehicle and the Top of the South ‘See Me’ campaign is about making drivers aware that our riders are real people who we need to keep safe.

Our focus rider this week is: John / Dad
Hi, I’m John and a father of two grown daughters.
I’m a keen motorcyclist riding for over 40 years. I ride a brilliant bike, a BMW F800GT. I also own 3 other motorbikes.
I enjoy riding because of the challenge, the feeling of being part of the environment and the sociality with other riders.

I’m retired now but still my ride my Ducati ST3S ABS every chance I get. I’ve been a motorcyclist for 60 years and I will never give it up.

Our focus rider this week is: Jono / Son
Giddy I’m Jono and have just moved here from Australia. NZ’ got to the best place to experience the thrill of 2 wheels.
I’m an IT guru working in Marlborough and loved a good ride to Kaikoura. Now I’ll just have to head to the west coast.
I have been a rider for over 10 years and am keen to take every opportunity to get out and enjoy Marlborough the way it should be enjoyed.

Our focus rider this week is: Lyn / Granny
I am a late learner in the art of motorcycling - I gained my Learners' Licence at 68 years old. I think the two training sessions late in 2013 will probably be etched forever in the heart of the instructor!!
I am also Granny Lyn to 9 fantastic grandchildren.
I've been riding for nearly 3 years.
My metal steed is a Yamaha Scorpio 225.
Riding a motorbike was something I had long wanted to do. As an incredible bonus, there is the all-encompassing feeling of being an integral part of the landscape and the routes and activities through it and in it.

Our focus rider this week is: Graham / Brother
I am a "work optional" international teacher who has been on the planet for a few decades. Nelson is home where we enjoy all that the Nelson district has to offer - motor bike cruising, the cycle trails network, mountain biking, kayaking, tramping, skiing and swimming and of course the great tasting provided by local eateries, wineries and breweries.
Prior to 2016 my last riding was in the 70's. I am a "recycled rider" and since January 2016 to the present I have clocked up 14000km. I don't need much prodding to suit up and get out on the highway!
My current motor bike is a Honda NC700S
I ride because it's a great way of feeling a part of the environment, it keeps you very aware of all other road users and it allows you to forget everything else and purely focus on the unfolding road ahead.

Our focus rider this week is: Pat / Husband
I am a 74-year-old retired pharmacist
I started riding in 1963, had a long break & returned to riding in the 1980s
I currently ride an SV650
Why do I ride? Can't explain. Perhaps being in control. Your ride is only as good as your skill level.
It gives me a pleasure I don't experience using other transport
