The Coastguard BIG swim kicks off today!

A month long swimming challenge where participants pick a distance they aim to swim in the month of June, rally supporters (you guys 😅) and raise funds for Coastguard!

We have two Radio Operators putting in the hard yards for us this month!

On Sunday we hosted 40 volunteer Radio Operators from units around the region for a full day of joint training and professional development.

Training focused on the use of TracPlus location and tracking software, and body recovery procedures, providing valuable hands-on learning and the opportunity to share knowledge between units.

These joint training days have been a new initiative taken on by the Radio Operator volunteers themselves around the region, and they’ve been incredibly successful! Highlighting the strong cooperation and commitment between regional Coastguard units.

To the families, friends and fellow volunteers affected by this tragedy, we extend our heartfelt condolences.

We know that every volunteer gives their time, care and courage to help keep others safe on the water.

The selflessness of volunteers binds our organisations and crews across the Tasman.

While we work in different places, the values that sit at the heart of what we do are the same - looking out for one another and stepping up when it matters most.

Our thoughts are with you 🤍

Last night was the darkest night ever experienced by Marine Rescue NSW.

Marine Rescue NSW volunteers answer the call for help 24/7 and last night six members from Marine Rescue Ballina did just that. They launched with a single mission, to save lives on the water and assist a yacht, reported to be in difficulty off the South Ballina break wall.

Tragically, two of our volunteers lost their lives during the response.

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Todd Andrews said the devastating loss is a solemn reminder of the risks faced by volunteers who serve their communities.

“These two men were serving their local community and have made the ultimate sacrifice to help others.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of the deceased, their fellow crew members, the brave radio operators who handled the difficult communications during the incident, the entire Marine Rescue NSW family and the wider Ballina community during this incredibly difficult time.

“We are supporting our volunteers and their families through professional counselling and chaplaincy support.

“We ask that the privacy of those involved and their families be respected during this difficult time,” Commissioner Andrews said.

Every second Monday we have a training night for our wet crew.

This week our very own president Steve held the training session and then we completed our vessel checks.

We do the vessel checks every fortnight, following a long list of things to check off; lights, batteries, pontoons, first aid kit, fuel, props etc.
Everything gets checked to make sure it’s in working order so if we have a call out we know we’re ready to rock and roll! 🤘
