Central City Plan Information and updates on the Christchurch Central City Plan. February 2011’s earthquake caused extensive damage to Christchurch’s Central City.

Much of the city as people knew it has changed forever. Under the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Act 2011, the Christchurch City Council was given the responsibility of developing a Central City Plan which will guide the redevelopment of the central city. The draft Central City Plan has been developed and written from the 106,000 ideas shared by our community during the six-week Share an Idea camp

aign. The draft was adopted by Council on Thursday 11 August and put forward for public consultation from Tuesday 16 August for four weeks. The final Plan will be presented to the Minister for Earthquake Recovery in December 2011 for consideration and approval.

All land within Christchurch’s Central City can be rebuilt on, says the geotechnical report by engineering consultants Tonkin & Taylor.

Council deliberations on the draft Central City Plan will continue on Mon 7 November at 9am in the Boardroom at the Beckenham Service Centre. Deliberations are expected to continue into Tues 8 November.

City Mall is a hive of activity this afternoon as retailers prepare for tomorrow's opening of the Re:Start the Heart temporary shopping precinct. Official opening by PM John Key starts at 12pm with access to the shops from 12:30-6pm.

We are now into week 2 of Council deliberations on all the comments submitted by the public on the draft Central City Plan. With over 5000 comments received, there is a lot for our Councillors to consider.

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker is suggesting that New Zealand should bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games with a rebuilt Christchurch City hosting the opening and closing events.

Another busy week for our Councillors who have been meeting every day to deliberate on the thousands of comments received from our community on the draft Central City Plan. They will then make recommendations and amendments for the final document which is to be produced in December.

Hearings on the draft Central City Plan finished on Wed. During the 8 days around 450 people and groups took the time to share their views on the draft Plan with the Council in person. The Council will begin deliberations on all the comments received from Monday next week.
