Urumau 🌿

High above Whakaraupō, Lyttelton Harbour, Urumau carries a name gifted by mana whenua, Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke, connecting this place to the whenua and the stories held within it.

Recognised as a Tohu Whenua, this historic site is a reminder that the stories of Ōtautahi Christchurch are held not only in its buildings, but in its landscapes, waterways and the names we carry forward.

From The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora to Pūtaringamotu Riccarton House & Bush, Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard House and Urumau, Lyttelton Timeball, this week we’ve been exploring some of the te reo Māori names that connect us to the history and identity of our city💚

Waiutuutu 💧

Running alongside Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard House, this small stream is part of a much bigger story of place.

Recognised as a Tohu Whenua, Te Whare Waiutuutu connects the story of Kate Sheppard and Aotearoa New Zealand's suffrage movement with the deeper history of the whenua (land) and waterways that have shaped Ōtautahi.

This Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, we’re exploring some of our local Tohu Whenua, and the names and stories that connect these places to the past and present.
