We're pleased that our sponsored kea Hohoro's recovery is going well at the South Island Wildlife Hospital. It's fascinating to hear the differences between juvenile and adult kea, and what's involved in Hohoro's treatment. Thanks again to the team for the amazing work they do! 💚

Most kea that we receive at the hospital are juveniles as they get up to a lot of mischief while learning about the world. It is less common for an adult, like this one, to come to us. Adults lose the distinctive yellow colouring that juveniles have around the eyes, across the nostrils (cere), and the shading on the beak. Take a look back at our previous kea posts to see the difference.
This individual, known as Hohoro, arrived with a broken beak which necessitated the use of a special material to bind and hold it back together. This is visible in the photo as a lighter colouration at the tip of the beak. Healing went well and they appear to be able to feed themselves despite the injury.

Did you know that Christchurch Gondola has sponsored a kea for many years as part of our commitment to supporting these incredible native birds?

Recently, one of our sponsored kea, Hohoro, was hospitalised after what is believed to have been a high-impact accident. It appears his head and beak may have taken the full force of the impact, leaving him with a fractured beak and concussion.

Thanks to the quick action and support of the Arthur’s Pass Wildlife Trust, Kea Conservation Trust, Renée and the South Island Wildlife Hospital, Hohoro received the care he needed and is now well on the road to recovery.

A visit was made today to check on Hohoro, and it was fantastic to see how well he is doing. His weight is now up to 895 grams, which is a great sign of his progress.
The hope is that Hohoro will be able to return home to Arthur’s Pass within the next few weeks.

A huge thank you to the South Island Wildlife Hospital for taking such wonderful care of this cheeky bird, and to everyone who played a part in getting Hohoro safely into their care.

We’re getting ready for the busy season with brand new drink fridges at the summit – making it faster and easier for you to grab a cold drink and go while soaking up those incredible views.
But getting them here wasn’t as simple as a delivery truck…
Everything had to be carefully transported up the gondola itself, with weight limits, balance, and logistics all playing a part. Not your average install job!
A big effort behind the scenes, all to improve your experience when you visit.
Next time you’re up, enjoy the quicker service and a perfectly chilled drink at the top.
