THERE WAS A EXTREMELY CLOSE CALL LAST NIGHT...with a wheelie bin saved by a passing member of the public extinguishing it with a garden hose and calling 111. This could have ended up as a full house fire.

HOT ASHES – DON’T LET THEM START A FIRE! 🔥
With winter fires in full swing, we’re reminding everyone to take extra care when disposing of ashes from wood burners, fireplaces and outdoor fires.

⚠️ Ashes can remain hot enough to start a fire for up to 5 days, even when they look completely cold.

🪣 The safe way to dispose of ashes:
• Place ashes in a metal container – never plastic or cardboard.
• Wet the ashes thoroughly with water.
• Keep the container well away from buildings, decks, vegetation and other combustible materials.
• Allow plenty of time for the ashes to cool completely before disposal.
• Never put warm ashes into your household rubbish bin.

Unfortunately our recent Brigade photo got some comments in relation to our Brigade “being a club” that it’s all about who you know if you get in or not.

This is true, we are a club, a club of cool kids helping out our community ❤️

It’s also true, it is who you know, we are very proud to of had and to have generations of families within our Brigade and Service (some go so far back cameras weren’t a thing 🤭) 💚

🔥But really at the end of the day, does it really matter who you know or is it about who you could get to know, both in others and yourself 🤷🏻‍♀️

🔥Our doors are always open weather it be you’re following a family tradition or the creation of one, everyone is welcome in our cool kids club 😘

We understand that some residents have recently expressed concerns that the volunteer fire brigade siren sounds similar to an air raid warning. While we appreciate that the sound can be startling, it's important to remember the critical role the siren plays in keeping our community safe.

For volunteer firefighters, the siren is more than just a loud alarm — it's a call to action. It helps alert brigade members that an emergency response is needed, often when every minute counts. Whether it's a house fire, vehicle accident, medical emergency, or vegetation fire, a rapid response can make all the difference.

Our volunteer firefighters give their time freely to protect our community, day and night. The siren is one of the most reliable ways to notify responders quickly, particularly in areas where mobile coverage, technology, or pagers may not always be sufficient on their own.

While the sound may be inconvenient for a few moments, it represents something reassuring: local volunteers mobilising to help a neighbour in need.

The next time you hear the siren, remember that someone in our community may be facing one of the worst days of their life — and our volunteer firefighters are answering the call.

❄️With winter kicking in, Cobden pack up and train out of the elements ☂️

🚒Fire trucks might look big, they are but when it comes to extra storage we are limited.

🚙That’s where our friends Cityhop come in handy! Located @ Greymouth Mitre 10 their cargo van is perfect for loading up our training gear!

🙌Check them out! Super easy sign up process and once you’re signed up you can use any city hop vehicle around NZ 🇳🇿

⭐️With National Volunteer week coming to an end we thought we’d share a bit about us 👋

🚒Cobden Volunteer Brigade makes up 15 of the 11,500 Volunteer Fire Fighters/Personal in Aotearoa👌

📌Our members are made up of Business owners, Managers, Supervisors, Truck drivers, Electricians , Road crew, Engineers, Plumbers, Teachers the list goes on.

📌Each member brings their own strengths and skills helping our Brigade to help our community.

👨‍🚒But most importantly our members are Mothers, Fathers, Sons, Daughters,Grandads, Sisters, Brothers, Husbands, Wives - Family💚

⭐️We couldn’t do what we do without our support crews at home and our employers backing us.

Cobden would like to thank all our members support crews ❤️
