Expect periods of heavy rain, and amounts may approach warning criteria. There is a moderate chance of upgrading to a Warning.

UPDATE 3 Feb: Because the expected rain didn’t eventuate, MetService has lifted the Heavy Rain Watch.

---

Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts... We have another Heavy Rain Watch.

🌧️🌂 MetService has issued a Heavy Rain Watch for the area between the Rangitata River and Seddon, in effect 2am-10pm Tuesday 3 February.

Rainfall may approach or exceed warning levels, so there is a high chance this Watch could be upgraded to a Warning.

Now's a good time to clear your drains and gutters, and bring in anything you don't want to get wet.

What to expect:

🌧️ Streams and rivers may rise rapidly
🚗 Surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions are possible

We’re keeping a close eye on conditions and will share updates here and on our website if anything changes.

⚠️Lake Pegasus: The National Public Health Service has issued a health warning after potentially toxic algae was found in Lake Pegasus.

During summer, toxic algae (cyanobacteria) start appearing in our rivers, lakes and other waterways.

🐾Our canine friends are most at-risk of the harmful effects of toxic algae. Just a small amount can have fatal consequences if swallowed.

Strong Wind Warnings are in place for Canterbury including Waimakariri. A period of severe northwest gales is forecast on Thursday.

🔴💨 RED Strong Wind Warning – Thursday 23 October 💨🔴

MetService has upgraded the Strong Wind Warning to RED for Christchurch and the Canterbury Plains, including Waimakariri.

🕙 10am – 4pm Thursday 23 October

Severe northwesterlies with damaging gusts up to 130 km/h are expected in exposed places.

🔴💨 Destructive winds may cause widespread damage, including to trees, powerlines, and roofs. Flying debris and falling trees pose a threat to life, and driving conditions will be very dangerous.

📻 Updates will be shared across media and radio in case of power outages.

🏡 What you should do
• Use Wednesday’s lull to prepare
• Secure trampolines, outdoor furniture, bins, and anything that could blow away.
• Stay indoors or in a sturdy shelter away from trees.
• Avoid travel where possible — debris and strong winds will make driving hazardous.
• Stay well clear of downed powerlines and call MainPower if you see damage.
• Avoid parks, rivers, and coastal areas – Tūhaitara Coastal Park is closed.
• Check outdoor fire sites from the last two weeks – make sure they’re completely out.
• Don’t light fires or use outdoor gas cookers.
• If you are medically dependent on power, make sure you have what you need or consider relocating temporarily.
• Kerbside collections for Thursday will move to Saturday 25 October. There will be no change to Friday collections.
• All bin deliveries/repairs scheduled for tomorrow will be postponed and carried out over Friday and Saturday.

Hi folks,
Well it’s Wednesday, time for a party political post. I’m intrigued by the push back over new people standing for various positions in our council elections. I suspect that a number of incumbents are not happy about change and I guess the status quo is easier as you know what to expect.
New people, different perspectives, why is that a bad thing? It doesn’t ha ve to be a complete change of personnel, just new faces to add some fresh insights.
Anyway it’s been quiet at my end, the meeting schedule has slowed down. I guess there are still issues to be followed up, in our case the Woodstock Landfill (no we don’t want it) and the Ohoka subdivision (no we don’t want that either).
Hopefully there are a few swing voters out there that need persuading to vote and hopefully they’ll give me a tick to help me be re-elected.
Don’t forget September 30 is the big one at the Oxford Club starting at 7.00pm.

Keeping Rates Low ⚖️

Waimakariri District Council has considered its draft budget for the year ahead, proposing a 4.98% rates increase - believed to be one of the lowest in Canterbury.

This small adjustment could help us balance rising costs while continuing to deliver essential services and projects that keep our district running smoothly.

The Draft Annual Plan, outlining our budget and work programme, will be formally adopted by the Council early in March.

We want to know your thoughts and it will open in mid-March for consultation. Stay tuned! 📅
