๐Ÿ“ Tararua District, New Zealand

The Tararua District was formed in 1989 in the national rationalisation and amalgamation of local authorities. The district is geographically one of the larger administered by a local authority in New Zealand and includes one of the largest roading networks. The district population however is relatively small; there is a population of 16,857 as at the last census in 2013. The Tararua stretches fro

m the ridges of the Ruahine and Tararua ranges - to the shores of the Pacific, totalling 424,000 hectares with a rich mix of rugged ranges, remote coastline, bush clad hills, farmland and forestry.

Tararua Alliance has received updated results from the concrete core sampling taken recently from Alfredton bridge. On the basis of these preliminary results, a bridge engineer has given approval to

The bridge engineer is still to confirm the heavy vehicle limitations and signage detailing the weight limit capacity of the bridge will be confirmed and sign-posted in the coming week or so.

In the meantime, concrete barriers have been placed at the entrances on both sides of the bridge to create a chicane for light vehicles only, to ensure heavy vehicles do not cross the bridge as this could damage the bridge further.

A temporary reduced speed limit of 30km remains in place.
Tararua Alliance is seeking further specialist advice on options for a longer-term solution and will update the community when that analysis has been completed.

From Weber in Tararua to Helsinki, Finland - our Huarahi Tลซhono Weber to Wimbledon (Route 52 Upgrade) project has been recognised on the global stage, taking out a Silver Award at the International Federation of Municipal Engineering (IFME) Awards.

The project was named runner-up in the Construction category and was the only New Zealand entry, competing against infrastructure projects from around the world.

Mayor Scott Gilmore has congratulated the project team below, including iwi partners, contractors, and everyone involved in delivering this significant upgrade.

Over three years, the project improved safety and resilience on Route 52 between Weber and Wimbledon, while supporting local jobs and delivering strong community and economic benefits for the region.

A proud moment for Tararua - and international recognition of what collaboration and local commitment can achieve.

Meridian Energy Meridian Energy is currently undertaking maintenance and upgrade works associated with the Te Rere Hau Wind Farm.

As part of this work:
๐Ÿ‘‰ North Range Road will be closed to through traffic for wind farm works
Residents will still have access.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Pahiatua Track (North Range Road / Pahiatua Track intersection) will have traffic management in place while works are carried out.

We appreciate your patience while this work is carried out and encourage drivers to plan ahead and follow all signage and traffic directions on site.

If you have any questions, please contact: [email protected]

๐Ÿšง Heads up: Major road changes near Te Rere Hau Wind Farm ๐Ÿšง

Weโ€™re underway with upgrades to the North Range Road corridor and the North Range Road / Pahiatua Track intersection as part of works required for the repowering of Te Rere Hau Wind Farm. The main focus of this work is making safety improvements at the intersection. While weโ€™re doing this, thereโ€™ll be traffic control on Pahiatua Track, and North Range Road will be closed to all traffic for up to five months to allow construction work to be done safely.

We know this is disruptive, but please respect the workers on site, and follow all instructions. Temporary traffic lights are there for your safety and that of others - please donโ€™t ignore them. This work involves extensive earthworks, with excavators and dump trucks actively working in the area, crossing the road frequently and sometimes operating within it.

Alternative access to properties on North Range Road will be provided to authorised people, but access by the public isnโ€™t permitted during the works. Please get in touch at [email protected] if you require access or have any questions.

Itโ€™s a bit of a pain, but itโ€™s very important, and the work is only temporary. We appreciate everyoneโ€™s patience and understanding as we work together to make this intersection safer.

Here is our response to the community feedback on local government reform, in full. Quick summary available in comments. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Tararua District Council has agreed on its next steps in response to the Central Government's proposal to reform (reshape) local government.

At an Extraordinary Meeting on 10 June, Council agreed to:

๐Ÿ”น Back the community's support for Option Six (fight for a better option), including the community's wish to challenge the proposed reform timeframe and look at other ways to improve local government.

๐Ÿ”น Investigate Option Four (go west to the Manawatลซ-Whanganui region), including financial modelling. This option had the strongest community support of any amalgamation option and was noted as either a first choice or backup option.

๐Ÿ”น Investigate Option Two (go south to Wairarapa), including financial modelling, noting support from iwi and some community members for this direction.

๐Ÿ”น Allow the Mayor and Chief Executive to continue talks with neighbouring councils.

No decision on amalgamation has been made. These are early decisions that reflect what the community told us: take the time to get this right, and put the district in the best position possible for whatever comes next.

From 18-27 May, Council held nine community meetings across the district, with more than 550 people in attendance. There were 409 people that shared their views through written and online feedback. Council also met with iwi partners and rural stakeholders.

Mayor Scott says the feedback from those meetings was consistent and clear.

"Our community was unhappy, and in many cases appalled, that a decision of this significance could be expected within just three months. This is the largest shake-up of local government since 1989, and potentially even more significant than that. Local voice was a recurring theme, with significant concern about changes that could weaken local representation. People also raised the importance of local accountability for roading, infrastructure, and emergency management, particularly given recent weather events in the district."

Mayor Scott says the clearest message was that the community wants Council to keep pushing for a better option than a simple amalgamation.

โ€œMany people questioned whether amalgamation would actually deliver lower costs or better local government, and there was a strong view that reform should improve local government, not simply abolish it favour of more distant regional government."

โ€œEven if our preference remains to pursue a better option, it is important that we understand the costs, benefits and implications of the options available. Having robust information will provide a valuable comparison and benchmark against the two options, and any alternative proposals that emerge. Thatโ€™s why Council has decided to seek more detailed financial modelling of amalgamation options within both the Horizons region and the Wairarapa.โ€

โ€œWhere people did express a preference for an amalgamation option, support for looking west within the existing Horizons region was strongest. Importantly, that support often reflected a least-worst position.โ€

Mayor Scott said the community's message has been heard.

"Our communities should get the final say on any plan. Localism, local voice and local decision making should be protected and enhanced, not eliminated. And any plan should genuinely deliver greater efficiency and affordability for our communities. That is what I will be advocating for throughout this process."

What happens next?

Council will now talk with neighbouring councils to find out whether they are willing to take part in further discussions. Financial modelling will also be carried out where possible, and engagement with iwi and communities will continue. Council will report back before 9 August 2026, which is the deadline Central Government has given councils to submit their proposals under the Head Start process.

Scott Gilmore - Tararua District Mayor

Weโ€™re aware of some areas at Mangatera Cemetery where the ground has settled, particularly in the southern section of the cemetery. This means that in certain places the ground level has dropped slightly over time, creating an uneven surface.

Ground settlement is a natural process that occurs to all burial plots over time, and our Facilities team is actively assessing and managing the area. Safety measures, signage and barriers are in place where needed, and the cemetery remains open.

You may notice fresh topsoil and grass seed in some areas as restoration work takes place. We also ask visitors to take care on uneven ground and avoid driving vehicles onto lawn areas.

Work will now be carried out in stages, depending on the level of settlement at each site.

A full update, including information about enquiries for specific plots, is available on our website here https://www.tararuadc.govt.nz/news/2026/june-2026/mangatera-cemetery-ground-settlement-assessments-underway
