FYI to our followers in the Tararua Region , hats off to the Mayor for being proactive and declaring this early incase things turn bad. Keep safe out there.

A State of Emergency has been declared by Mayor Scott Gilmore for the whole Tararua District pre-emptive of the severe weather expected this evening and overnight, based on forecasts from MetService.
This declaration enables us to act quickly and coordinate resources if conditions worsen. People are strongly urged to take this seriously and prepare now, while there is still daylight.
Council has activated its response team and is monitoring the situation closely.

Key risks include:
โ—๏ธ Slips and debris on roads
โ—๏ธ Widespread landslides in both rural and urban areas
โ—๏ธ Surface flooding
โ—๏ธ Rising rivers
โ—๏ธ Hazardous driving conditions
โ—๏ธ Heavy swells on our coastlines
โ—๏ธ Power outages

Please avoid travel if possible. Slips and surface flooding may impact travel. Do not enter flood waters.

Home advice:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Move any items from areas of your property that are prone to flooding.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Clear gutters and drains to help prevent surface flooding.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Bring inside anything that can be broken or picked up by strong winds, or tie them down.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Bring pets inside where possible.

Farm advice:
๐Ÿ‘‰ If you have livestock, know which paddocks are safe to move them away from floodwaters, landslides, isolated trees, and power lines.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Stay away from parts of your farms that are at risk of landslides.
๐Ÿ‘‰ If there has been a landslide, stay well away as there is the risk of further landslides occurring.

Boating advice:
There are significant swells forecast for both coasts, with the east coast expected to see combined waves of up to 8 metres.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Stay out of the water, away from beaches, and be prepared to move to higher ground.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Boats should be moored securely or moved to a safe location. Use rope or chain to secure boat trailers.

Make sure your devices are charged and you have a battery-powered radio to listen to news updates.
Look out for each other. Take the time to check in on friends, whฤnau and neighbours. Itโ€™s easier to get through emergencies when we work together

Contact us on 06 374 4080 or 06 376 0110 for any issues or information.
Call 111 for any emergencies.

I must say it's hot work being on a fire ground but it's also invigorating and also makes me proud to be in a rural volunteer brigade. Our crew are a great bunch of people.

So unfortunately we are not allowed to stand under the water even though it was hot haha.

FYI

The Hawkeโ€™s Bay District will move to an open fire season from 9am Wednesday 28 January.

An open fire season means fires can be lit without a permit, as long as people use common sense and follow fire safety guidelines, which can be found on www.checkitsalright.nz.

๐Ÿ’กNow is also a good time to ensure your property is prepared in the event of fire.

๐ŸกCut your grass, keep it short, and check your driveway is clear to allow fire trucks access if necessary

๐Ÿชต Keep burn piles small. Donโ€™t light more than one at a time and have sufficient means to fully extinguish any burn offs.

๐Ÿ“ฒ For fire safety advice and more information on how to prepare your property head to www.checkitsalright.nz

Another bit of information re fire risk this weekend , please note all fire permits are suspended.

Another bit of information re fire risk this weekend , please note all fire permits are suspended.

Itโ€™s getting hot out there, so listen to what weโ€™ve got to sayโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ”ฅ High fire danger across Hawkeโ€™s Bay ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Things are heating up across Ahuriri Heretaunga, Central Hawkeโ€™s Bay, and Northern Tararua from tomorrow.

With temperatures over 30ยฐC, strong winds, low humidity, and very little rain, we have the potential to have what Fire and Emergency calls spike fire risk days.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ These conditions mean fires can start easily, spread fast, and quickly become extremely difficult to control.

๐Ÿš’ Our crews are ready and prepared โ€” but we need the publicโ€™s help too.

A few small actions can make a big difference:

๐Ÿšซ Hold off on spark-makers

Postpone mowing, grinding, welding, or using power tools.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Check old burn piles

If theyโ€™re less than two months old, make sure theyโ€™re fully out.

๐Ÿš’ Clear access for fire trucks

At least 4m wide x 4m high on driveways.

๐Ÿ“ Make your RAPID number visible

It helps crews find you faster when seconds matter.

๐Ÿ“ž See smoke? Call 111 immediately

Early calls help us stop small fires becoming big ones.

๐Ÿšซ Fire permits suspended

Most of Hawkeโ€™s Bay is already in a restricted or prohibited fire season, and all fire permits are suspended across the District from today.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Stay up to date at www.checkitsalright.nz

Letโ€™s all do our bit to keep Hawkeโ€™s Bay safe.

One spark is all it takes โ€” letโ€™s not be that spark. ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿš’

FENZ have advised that the weather forecast for Ahuriri Heretaunga, Central Hawke's Bay and northern areas of the Tararua District will increase the risk of EXTREME FIRE CONDITIONS over the weekend period of 9 to 11 January.

Warmer conditions, wind gusts and low humidity mean that the wildfire risk is elevated.

FENZ advise all property owners to take the following precautions to keep themselves and their properties safe:

Minimise anything that could create a spark

Keep your grass short - clean dead leaves and debris from gutters and decks

Keep your driveway clear of trees and hedges for trucks (at least 4m x 4m clearance)

If you have a RAPID property number, make sure the RAPID number is easy for emergency services to see it

If you see smoke call 111

For further information on extreme fire conditions and wildfire measures please visit the FENZ website:
