FENZ have advised that the weather forecast for Ahuriri Heretaunga, Central Hawke's Bay and northern areas of the Tararua District will increase the risk of EXTREME FIRE CONDITIONS over the weekend period of 9 to 11 January.

Warmer conditions, wind gusts and low humidity mean that the wildfire risk is elevated.

FENZ advise all property owners to take the following precautions to keep themselves and their properties safe:

Minimise anything that could create a spark

Keep your grass short - clean dead leaves and debris from gutters and decks

Keep your driveway clear of trees and hedges for trucks (at least 4m x 4m clearance)

If you have a RAPID property number, make sure the RAPID number is easy for emergency services to see it

If you see smoke call 111

FACT: 97% of wildfires in New Zealand are caused by people.

We know the silly season is upon us, but that doesn’t mean we need to be silly with fire. To stay safe and prepared, check out these tips from us:
🔥 Always check whether it’s safe to light a fire and if you’ll need a fire permit at checkitsalright.nz
➡️ Plan your escape route. When planning your route, you won’t always know what direction the fire is coming from. It’s important to have more than one way out.
🌳 Identify a safe zone that is clear of vegetation in case you can’t evacuate and must shelter in place.
🚒 If you have a RAPID number, make sure it's visible at your property entrance. Your accessway must be wide enough for a fire truck to get through (4m wide by 4m high).

C’mon Hawke’s Bay – let’s all stay safe this summer! 🌞

Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s Hawke’s Bay Districts have enforced a total ban on outdoor fires and fireworks from midday today until 8am on Monday 27 October.

It comes as winds are forecast to exceed 100km/hr in many places, with high temperatures and low humidity creating very high fire risk conditions.

Hawke’s Bay has already seen significant fires from the windy conditions on Tuesday.

The prohibition means no new outdoor fires can be lit. People must also check their previous burns for signs of reignition.

Hawke’s Bay Community Risk Manager Nigel Hall says they need the public’s help to ease the load on their firefighters.

"Anyone who has had an outdoor fire since the beginning of September is asked to go and check today that it is completely out," he says.

"If you see any sign of heat or smoke, please act immediately to fully wet down the site. If this is not possible, call 111 so that firefighters can assist."

The community can also help by refraining from letting off fireworks as part of Diwali celebrations while the fireworks ban is in place.

People planning outdoor activities over the long weekend should remember that all campfires and bonfires are also prohibited.

The prohibitions are in addition to the ones in place in Wellington, Marlborough, Canterbury and Mid-South Canterbury for the same time period.
