Sigh – sometimes it’s hard to get good coverage.

Today’s front page headline in the Star newspaper suggests managed retreat is set to go off like a bomb in South Dunedin, displacing 13,000 people.

Um, not quite.

Sure, there is a significant amount of work going on, involving numerous agencies, to better understand the risks posed by climate change and sea level rise in South Dunedin.

That work will mean we’re all better informed when decisions do need to be made about managing climate-related risks in South Dunedin.

There are many options ‘on the table’, and managed retreat is one tool in toolbox, but the likelihood is a range of options will be used in different parts of South Dunedin over many decades.

Today’s misleading reporting just causes unnecessary fear and concern in our community.

Our planning is also consistent with the Ministry for the Environment’s national adaptation plan, which (as well as managed retreat) focuses on three other options for adapting to climate change:

1. Avoid - Stop putting people, houses and other assets in harm’s way, including by using planning rules to avoid future hazards.

2. Protect - Hold the line and protect what we have using natural buffers, like dunes, or hard structures like pipes, pumps and seawalls.

3. Accommodate - Change existing assets to cope with the risks, such as raising floor levels or making alternative flood paths

We’ll be updating the community on this work in the coming months, to help people better understand the real picture in South Dunedin.

⚠️ HEAVY RAIN WARNING ⚠️ A heavy rain warning is in place for Dunedin with 60 to 90mm of rain expected between 7am tomorrow (Tuesday) and 9am on Wednesday.

The ground is already very wet following recent bad weather, and more heavy rain could cause flooding and slips and make driving difficult.

If you notice a blocked mud tank near your home please clear debris on to the footpath. Our contractors will pick it up when the weather clears.

Contractors have been out checking storm and wastewater systems and sweeping gutters.

We will continue to monitor the situation and contractors will be on call to respond to issues as and when they arise. Stay safe!
