🎉 Blueskin Road Reopens Early!

🚗 Great news! Slip repairs on Blueskin Road — including the construction of a new retaining wall — have been completed ahead of schedule, and the road is now fully open again just in time for this weekend.

✅That means no more detours — you can travel the route as usual.

🙏 Thanks for your patience and understanding while these important safety improvements were carried out. Special thanks also to our contractors for delivering this work early!

Tick tock… time is running out to have your say on Dunedin's future! ⏳

Our survey on the Government’s plans to simplify local government and create a unitary authority across Otago closes this weekend!

To have YOUR say on what local government could like in Aotearoa, fill in our short survey online: otagomayors.org.nz

How do you want local government to be? What's most important to you? A healthy environment? Key services and infrastructure? Keeping decisions local?

Thanks to the 526 (and counting!) Dunedin superstars who have already taken the time to answer our questions. If you’re not one of them, our survey closes at 11.59pm on Sunday 14 June – so this is your last chance to let us know what you think.

Now is the time! Get in quick! Let's hear Dunedin's voice loud and proud ✨

Time for some fun! 🤩 The Ōpoho Playground is once again open for play! 🛝 We’ve been upgrading and refurbishing the popular recreational area, and have just completed the finishing touches.

We’ve kept some of the older elements in - but made sure to add in some exciting new equipment. 🎡

Additions to the playground include:
🛝 A new tube slide with platform
🎠 A four-bay swing set
🐵 Monkey bars
🤸‍♂️ A dynamic beam and balance beams
🥅 Climbing nets
🪁 And a walking seesaw

The additions create a challenging obstacle and balance course that weaves through the trees making a fun and exploratory new playground. Go check it out! ⛱️ 🎡

Are you more like a quiet Little Blue Penguin, or more like a vocal red-billed gull? 🐧🦤

We’ve been asking for your thoughts on the Government’s plans to simplify local government and create a unitary authority across Otago – and already 325 people in our Dunedin community have proudly spoken up (like our chirpy tarāpunga) on what local government could look like in Aotearoa.

BUT, we know our flock is much bigger than that! Our survey on local government reform is still open, and we want to hear from more of our colony 🤗

You might be shy like our lovely wee Blue Penguins, but now's the time to be bold and squawk your thoughts.

What is most important to you in local government reform? Healthy environment? Key services and infrastructure? Keeping decisions local?

📝Fly over to our survey and share your answers by Sunday, 14 June: https://www.otagomayors.org.nz

When you’re cleaning out the fireplace, don’t let your hot ashes pull a surprise comeback tour.

Here’s what you need to do to keep your bin (and your house) from turning into a bonfire:

👉Store them in a sturdy metal container with a tight-fitting lid. Plastic bins and hot ashes are a match made in hell. Literally.

👉 Dampen the ashes. Give them a good sprinkle of water - think of it as sending them to ash rehab.

👉 Leave them alone for at least three days. Yes, three full days! They need time to cool down and reflect on their fiery life choices.

👉 Bag the cold, damp ashes before putting them in your red-lidded rubbish bin. Don’t just chuck them in like a daredevil. Pre-bag or prepare to meet your local fire crew.

Stay safe so you don’t become 'that person who set their wheelie bin on fire'.

Thanks to everyone who have offered their thoughts on our Dunedin Local Alcohol Policy (LAP) review. You can still take part by completing the online survey before 5pm Friday 5 June. We can then take your ideas into account when forming a new draft LAP, which will go out for formal consultation later this year.

Have a look at the current LAP and then go to the survey to see a range of possible options for change that seek to minimise harm. The options have come out of conversations with key stakeholders. You can use the survey to let us know what you think of the options and to offer your own suggestions for what needs to change or stay the same regarding alcohol licensing.

The survey is open to all, we expect it will be of particular interest to community agencies and those who hold licenses for the sale or supply of alcohol, such as those in the hospitality industry, clubs, and off- and on-licenced premises.

Heads up – please don’t put gas bottles in the rubbish or recycling bins as they may explode and start a fire. 🆘
Your rubbish truck does not need spontaneous combustion today. The driver has enough problems 🤦

Old unused gas bottles can be taken to Green Island Landfill for recycling. There is a charge for this service.

Other options include recertifying or swapping expired bottles so check with your local gas supplier too.

Have your say on the future of local government 📢

The government is preparing some big changes to how local government will look in the future - and we've got a chance to have our say on what matters most ahead of these changes.

🤔What's working? What's not? What do you want the future to look like in Ōtepoti Dunedin and Otago?

A short regional survey is now open until Sunday 14 June, and it will only take a few minutes of your time: https://www.otagomayors.org.nz

We're working closely with our neighbouring councils to consider a proposal that works for our communities. Your feedback will help shape the next steps and future options for how local government could work in our rohe (region) ✨

Significant change is coming for councils across New Zealand, as the Government has announced its requirements to simplify local government (regional, city and district councils) by October 2028.

❄️ Want to check the condition of the roads before heading out on your morning commute? We update our website daily with information of road conditions, closures and hazards.

🌡️Our contractors are patrolling our roads for you over the winter months to check the conditions and grit or de-ice the roads that need it. They’ll focus on main roads, before moving to streets which connect to main roads.

⚠️While gritting and de-icing can help reduce the impact of ice, they won’t prevent you taking a slide, so please drive or ride carefully. Most residential streets are not gritted, so make sure you drive to the conditions and keep an eye out for icy or shaded spots.
