And that's my part done. After running out of coffee sacks and wood chippings, cardboard and leafs had to be gathered. Hard to get pictures of the new plants with the wood chipping back ground. Managed to cover the pile of leafs as well.
Happy to saved a fair few plants from the w**ds and Ivy as well as planting new ones with a good head start.

Cycled down to Harrington point today and while there I had a look at the plants. Also.... Fourth time lucky and managed to see a Sea lion. The plants seem to be doing great a few months on and even the sea lion waddled around then rather than through them.

Some great progress at the bottom of the stairs! I've been provided some coffee sacks and lambs wool carpet to act as a w**d block as well. Gonna be able to get some new native trees and plants in the ground as well.

Slowly clearing out more w**ds in this area. Managed to uncover 10 trees and big plants so far. Tree maintenance is just as important as tree planting but doesn't quite get the same glory. I've used some of the space to plant some trees as well. Just need a w**d eater now before this pile gets bigger than the house!

Return to Te Rauone Reserve Part 2. Moving on from the maintenance, let's talk about the days mission. 20 volunteers and 700 plants and a beautiful blank canvas! From 10am to 2pm on a very sunny spring day the collective effort smashed it. A tweaked approach on this day with the fertiliser tablet and addition water crystals to give these plants the best chance coming into the dryer part of the year. The wind and weather is unpredictable in this part but hopefully this will have a lasting effect. 2000 plants still needed in this reserve but may have to wait until the seasons change.

Back to Te Rauone Reserve.... Part 1. Two weeks have passed since I was last here with the DCC helping to plant 150 plants between 5 of us. I wasn't expecting them to have grown much, but to be betrayed by mother nature and the outrageous winds was a let down to say the least. Where the heavy winds had blown the sand it had left the roots exposed. So the first job of the day was to replant (much deeper this time). We were out in force today with around 20 volunteers leading a charge against the wind to protect the dunes. This was a lesson for me that unique areas like this have unexpected results and you really need experts/ experience to get projects like this going. Luckily we had plenty of both with the Parks and rec team from DCC. Part 2 will explain today's objective.

Just a few steps away from my apartment is this green retreat. It's become overgrown over the years but plenty of opportunities for new trees. While digging the hole I came across this plastic bottle with white liquid inside. A real sign of how long plastic litter will stay on unfortunately .

Last week I helped Dunedin city council plant 150 of the 3000 plants needed to hopefully protect the sand dunes on the Te Rauone Reserve. Without the dunes there will be more erosion on this beach. There was a hope of visits from sea lions but no luck today, I will be back to help out soon to help reach the 3000 target.

One of the trees I helped OneTreePerChild plant back in Bristol over a year ago. Looking forward to seeing how much it's grown since Nov 2021.
These types of trees can provide great shady areas along the pathways and bring down average temperatures in local areas as well as boosting air quality. If you live in Bristol there are opportunities every Wednesday to help out.
