Police have arrested eight people and seized cash and drugs following search warrants in the Queenstown area.

Over the past two months, Police have executed a number of search warrants in relation to the possession and supply of class A drugs.

During the warrants over $120,000 in cash was located and seized, along with over 60 grams of co***ne, and amounts of ketamine, GBL, and MDA.

As a result, eight men have been arrested and charged.

Otago Lakes Central Investigations Manager, Detective Senior Sergeant Steve Salton says to be able to take this many alleged offenders off the streets is a great result for the community.

“Five of these men were security guards working as doormen at local bars and clubs, resulting in a security company losing their security licence.

“It’s disappointing to see that people working in roles intended to keep people safe, are in fact doing the opposite and causing huge amounts of community harm in the supply of these drugs.

“Our enquiries into these matters are ongoing and we cannot rule out further arrests,” Detective Senior Sergeant Salton says.

“Police continue to investigate the supply of illicit drugs in the Queenstown area and anyone with information around this type of offending is urged to get in touch.”

Urgent information on offending that is happening now should be reported through 111 immediately. Non-emergency information can be provided through 105, either online or over the phone.

You can also provide information anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

NZ Civil Defence are testing the Emergency Mobile Alert (EMA) system on Sunday 14 June, between 6-7pm ⚠️📲

If you have a hidden second phone for your safety, we recommend turning it off or putting it in flight mode for the duration of the test (6-7pm on Sunday 14 June) to ensure it’s not discovered when the nationwide Emergency Mobile Alert is sent.

Some mobile devices set to silent mode will still emit a sound when the Emergency Mobile Alert test is sent, so switching to flight mode or turning off your device is the only way to avoid the loud sound of the alert.

You can find more information about the Emergency Mobile Alert system, including a factsheet and list of FAQs at 🚨 https://getready.govt.nz/en/prepared/ema

Electric dirt bikes are creating serious concerns for Police, with the vehicles featuring in a growing number of crashes and cases of illegal riding.

In most instances, the bikes, which can exceed 80kmh, are required to be registered.

Ignorance won’t protect you from fines or having your dirt bike confiscated, and Police are routinely stopping riders on electric dirt bikes to make sure both the bike and the rider are compliant with the law

You need a valid driver’s licence if:

🔹The electric motor exceeds 300 watts (not kilowatts)
🔹The bike is capable of speeds over 50kmh
🔹The bike does not have pedals (i.e., it cannot be classified as a power-assisted cycle).

The bike needs a Warrant of Fitness and registration if:

🔹If it can exceed 50kmh: It must be registered as a motorcycle
🔹If it cannot exceed 50kmh: It may be registered as a moped
🔹In both cases, the vehicle must be entry certified and meet roadworthy standards
🔹A Warrant of Fitness is required unless exempted (e.g., some mopeds).

Electric dirt bikes are not bicycles if:

🔹They lack pedals
🔹They have motors exceeding 300 watts
🔹They are capable of autonomous propulsion without rider input.

Police have arrested and charged two youths following a recent spate of vehicle related crime in Winton.

On the night of Friday 29 May, Police received a number of reports of vehicles having allegedly been broken into.

Western Southland's Area Response Manager Senior Sergeant Peter Graham says one vehicle had allegedly been stolen before being lit on fire near the Oreti River Bridge.

"Following these incidents Police started to make enquiries to identify and located those allegedly responsible.

"This included reviewing CCTV footage provided by members of the community and the recently installed Crime Prevention cameras."

Yesterday, Police executed two search warrants in the Winton area, where the youths were located.

"This is a great example of Police and the community working together to get this result.

"We would like to thank everyone who assisted us in our enquiries."

The two youths have been bailed, and are due to appear in Invercargill Youth Court at a later date.

Anyone who sees any suspicious or unlawful behaviour is asked to contact Police on 111 immediately.

In non-emergencies, information can be provided online at 105.police.govt.nz, or call 105.

Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 0800 555 111.
