Open Letter from our Board and Staff
Tēnā tātou Tainui School Community,
As you may be aware there has been a recent directive to remove expectations for school boards to uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
The Tainui School Board wishes to confirm to our tamariki, school and community whānau that in alignment with our commitment to cultural integrity and educational excellence, we remain committed to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
We want to assure you that we will continue to work towards honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi in the way in which we teach, govern, make decisions and connect across our school whānau. This affirms our dedication to maintaining a culturally responsive environment for our ākoka and honouring the rich heritage of Ōtepoti and Aotearoa.
When our school upholds Te Tiriti, our tamariki learn about partnership as well as developing unwavering respect for different cultures, our histories, and for te reo Māori. They learn how they collectively fit together in our communities and how important they all are to being part of ‘a caring community where everyone learns and flourishes’. All of these values provide a strong educational foundation for building happy and healthy tamariki.
We will be formally communicating our stance to the Ministry of Education in our opposition of the amendment to section 127(2)(e) of the Education and Training Act.
The Board is dedicated to continued advocacy for the preservation of Te Tiriti o Waitangi as both a founding document for Aotearoa and an understanding of partnership in action.
We appreciate your ongoing support as we navigate this important matter together. Thank you for your continued trust and support.
Kā mihi nui,
Tainui School Board and Staff Members
