●The newly designed POHOS website was activated in 2020:
https://polesdownsouth.org.nz
The work on the website continues, in preparation for the 150th celebrations, to be held throughout the 2022, honouring the early Polish settlers to Otago who sailed from Hamburg to Port Chalmers in 1872. Poles continued to arrive through the Vogel years till 1876. The next big group of Poles arrived in 1944, consisting of 734 children refugees, most of them orphaned, accompanied by 103 adults who offered care and assistance to the Polish children. More waves of Polish immigrants followed, at the end of WWII, then during the period preceeding the changes instituted by the Solidarity movement, which freed Poland from the Russian oversight and enforced political influences and reintroduced free democratic elections. Nowadays, Poles still choose to settle in NZ, for work and study purposes, with freedom to choose NZ as a permanent home or as a part-time domicile. Polish tourists who venture that far are delighted to discover the legendary beauty spots, on and off the tourist routes, to view New Zealand's unique flora and fauna, to partake in local traditions and Maori culture and to learn about the Poles who came before them and contributed to the economic and cultural developments in NZ. Please feel free to visit the new webpage:
