●The newly designed POHOS website was activated in 2020:
https://polesdownsouth.org.nz
The work on the website continues, in preparation for the 150th celebrations, to be held throughout the 2022, honouring the early Polish settlers to Otago who sailed from Hamburg to Port Chalmers in 1872. Poles continued to arrive through the Vogel years till 1876. The next big group of Poles arrived in 1944, consisting of 734 children refugees, most of them orphaned, accompanied by 103 adults who offered care and assistance to the Polish children. More waves of Polish immigrants followed, at the end of WWII, then during the period preceeding the changes instituted by the Solidarity movement, which freed Poland from the Russian oversight and enforced political influences and reintroduced free democratic elections. Nowadays, Poles still choose to settle in NZ, for work and study purposes, with freedom to choose NZ as a permanent home or as a part-time domicile. Polish tourists who venture that far are delighted to discover the legendary beauty spots, on and off the tourist routes, to view New Zealand's unique flora and fauna, to partake in local traditions and Maori culture and to learn about the Poles who came before them and contributed to the economic and cultural developments in NZ. Please feel free to visit the new webpage:

and to like this page which updates the upcoming events tab. Do zobaczenia. Moc pozdrowien. Kind regards

Definitely a surprise to find out about the copper product 0in Poland.

Most people have no idea where Europe's copper comes from.

Poland is the answer.

KGHM — a Polish state company — operates some of the deepest copper mines in the world, right beneath the plains of Lower Silesia.

Poland produces more copper than any other country in Europe. It supplies the wiring, the pipes, the infrastructure that keeps the continent running.

The engine of Europe is buried under Polish soil.

UPDATE: TODAY, April 3rd 🎬

TVNZ 1 will screen the Polish 2017 drama, "The Zookeeper's Wife" tomorrow on Good Friday, April 3, 2026 @ 7:55pm.

The film retells the story of Antonina Żabińska's heroic efforts, along with her husband Jan's help, to save the animals kept at the Warsaw Zoo. More importantly, the couple was able to hide and shelter many individuals, mostly Polish Jews from being captured by the German N**i occupiers. The action takes place during WWII. It is partially based on Antonina's diaries.

We pit The Zookeeper's Wife movie vs. the true story of Antonina and Jan Zabinski, comparing the movie to the book based on Antonina Zabinski's diary.

Kapusniak, sauerkraut soup and bigos, hunter's stew, both made with sauerkraut bit they are two very different dishes. No surprise that both have similar tangy notes from the preserved pickled cabbage. Polish sauerkraut can be purchased easily, off the shelf and in a jar, at the local PaknSave store in Dunedin.

Enjoy making both dishes.
The recipe for hunters stew was posted yesterday.

Basics of bigos, Polish hunter's stew.
There are as many different recipes for making bigos as there are cooks, if not even more.

Each family has its own favourite ingredient that they add. I love bigos with prunes which are added during the stewing phase. What is yours?
Freezing bigos improved its taste, but the question remains, 'will there be any leftovers'.

Try this simple recipe for traditional Polish Hunter’s Stew, also known as Bigos. It is a very delicious and hearty dinner, that you can make easily!
