Mackenzie District Council

Mackenzie District Council Mackenzie District Council manages this page as a channel to provide information about Council activities to the public.

Information is also provided via our website, newsletter and from time to time in local publications. Later this year there will be the option to sign up to a MyMDC account and opt to receive information updates from council directly via email. We are a small council with limited resources and are not able to monitor our social media pages around the clock, and cannot always respond to comments/me

ssages that come in via Facebook. In common with other Councils we are finding that comments are increasingly becoming a source of mis-information and it is often challenging for us to respond without starting a confrontation. Therefore our information posts generally do not have public comments enabled. When council is seeking feedback on specific topics we do so via our engagement website - https://letstalk.mackenzie.govt.nz. We encourage you to have your say on issues of interest, and all feedback is collated and provided to decision makers. When not undertaking engagement or consultation on a specific topic, we are always available to answer questions, listen to feedback and to resolve problems when they occur, and there are a number of ways you can do this. Enquiries should be directed to our customer services team via our website, by email, phone or in person at our offices in Twizel and Fairlie. Phone: Fairlie or Twizel via phone – 0800 685 8514 (out of hours service available 24/7);
Email: [email protected]
Website: www.mackenzie.govt.nz

There is also a public forum at the beginning of all council meetings which provides an opportunity to address council directly. Details can be found on our website. We recognise that some issues cause frustration, and we are always happy to talk them through. However we do ask everyone to treat our Council team with respect. We operate a zero tolerance policy for abusive behaviour towards any of our staff. Thank you for your understanding. ELECTION 2025
Mackenzie District Council's page must not be used for electioneering purposes. Any comment - positive or negative - made by any individual specifically relating to their own - or someone else's - nomination, intention to run for council/community board or election campaign, will be removed immediately.

Roadworkers apply grit to roads to make your travel easier. Drive on the grit rather than in people’s wheel tracks.

Grit is a layer of fine gravel that helps give you more grip in snowy or icy conditions. If you see we’ve spread grit on the road, driving on the fresher grit will give you more grip.

We’re constantly monitoring how winter weather is affecting travel on the state highways and you’ll see roadworkers working to keep the roads open and safe for you.

You may come across roadworkers in trucks applying grit, a layer of fine gravel to help give you more grip in snowy or icy conditions, or a range of anti-ice treatments which they’ll spread or spray onto roads to help reduce the effects of ice.

Grit and anti-ice treatments will help you travel more easily and safely but they won’t eliminate the effect of snow and ice. You still need to adjust your speed to suit the conditions.

• Slow down. Avoid sudden braking or turning to reduce the risk of sliding.
• Watch out for areas shaded from the sun – they stay slippery for longer.
• It takes longer to stop on slippery roads, so increase your following distance to people ahead of you.

If you come across roadworkers applying grit or anti-ice treatments to a road, be careful as you pass them. Pass slowly and keep as safe a distance as possible. The road immediately behind the roadworkers will still be slippery, and the roadworkers won’t’ve treated the road ahead of them yet, so take extra care.

Conditions can change quickly in winter, and the speed at which snow and ice can appear means there’ll be times we haven’t yet been able to spread grit or the anti-ice treatments.

When the weather is bad, always check our page to see if state highways are affected before you travel. Follow us if you aren’t already.
