Franz Josef Community Council

Franz Josef Community Council Keeping you up to date with what's happening around Franz Josef. Administered by the Franz Josef Community Council. State Highway 6 runs through the town.

Franz Josef / Waiau is a small town in the West Coast region of the South Island of New Zealand. Whataroa is 32 kilometres (20 mi) to the north-east, and the township of Fox Glacier is 23 kilometres (14 mi) to the south-west. The Waiho River runs from the Franz Josef Glacier to the south, through the town, and into the Tasman Sea to the north-west. The town is named after the Franz Josef Glacier -

itself named by Julius von Haast in honour of the Emperor of Austria Franz Josef I of Austria. Following the passage of the Ngai Tahu Claims Settlement Act 1998, the name of the town was officially altered to Franz Josef / Waiau. The glacier's terminal face is 5 kilometres (3 mi) from the town and its accessibility makes it a major tourist attraction and the reason many people visit Franz Josef. The town is within the Westland Tai Poutini National Park.

The AGM for the Franz Josef Community Council is coming up on Wednesday 7th October, 7:00pm. All are welcome to attend!

Good Afternoon all. I wanted to give an update on the community hall. With the drop to Alert Level 1 a few weeks ago, there is no longer a need to book spaces at the gym. If you have a current membership & an access code to the building you’re welcome to turn up and use the facilities whenever suits you. We have a COVID-19 tracking poster on the front door, and we encourage users to download the COVID-19 tracking app and make use of this when entering the facility. We are also asking groups using the facility to keep a record of attendance in case this is needed for contact tracing. All other restrictions that were put in place during lockdown have been lifted.

Bookings for the squash courts, main hall, and multipurpose room can continue to be made online here: https://franzhall.skedda.com/

If anyone would like to enquire about renewing their gym membership or getting a new membership, please drop an email ([email protected]) and I will help facilitate the process.

Finally, we are putting together a Gym Sub-Committee that will help with looking after the gym facility, and identify any maintenance / upgrades that are required. If anyone is interested in bring involved with this group please let me know.

Aaron

Hi gym users 🙂. Glad to have you back. Can you please, please put the weights away after you use them? If it’s too heavy, maybe do one less rep so you’ve still got the strength to tidy up after you? Thanks

Hi all - Franz Hire & Contracting have donated and delivered approx. 20 cubic metres of bark to the Franz Josef Playground at the Community Hall. We need at least 15 people to come along with wheelbarrows, shovels and rakes (or machinery if you have it) to spread it out. If the bark is not moved by 5pm on Sunday 24 May 2020, FJCC will pay to have it shifted into the playground. Please let us know if you can help out. You can gather a group to do the work or just take yourself down and spread a few loads - it’s over to you..

Hi all

You will be pleased to know that the community hall facility will be open on Tuesday 19 May 2020 from 6:00am – 9:00pm daily. This is exciting progress but is not yet a return to normal.

INFORMATION FOLLOWS ABOUT:
Payment of membership
Online booking
New entry codes
Restrictions and requirements for use of facility under Covid-19 Alert Level 2

There are restrictions due to Covid-19 Alert Level 2 that must be adhered to and they are outlined below.

There is a lot of information that you need in this email. Please read it carefully and contact me if you have any questions. It is so good to finally have the gym, hall and squash courts open for us all to use again.

We are serious about the Covid-19 restrictions and you all know that the restrictions are necessary for everyone’s safety, health and wellbeing. IT IS TEMPORARY AND WE WILL RETURN TO NORMAL USE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

There are some changes at the hall that you need to be aware of also. Importantly for you is the introduction of the new doors that require a 4-digit entry code.

MEMBERSHIP
Membership must be current to receive an entry code. Membership costs have been considered by the FJCC Executive Committee and may have been increased however, in light of the current circumstances for locals, it has been decided to continue at the same cost as for past years with one exception – squash.

Currently, to access the squash court you either need to pay for Gym & Hall access at $150 per year or pay $7 per game of squash, which the facility is not set up for.

Therefore we can offer access to the squash court only for $50 per year meaning you don’t have to pay for a gym membership if you do not wish to use the gym if you chose this payment method.

NEW BOOKING SYSTEM
EVERYONE will need to book the facility including gym, hall and squash court online. Here is the link to the booking system https://franzhall.skedda.com/

FRANZ JOSEF COMMUNITY HALL USE DURING COVID-19 ALERT LEVEL 2

All users will have booked online prior to arrival at the facility

If you feel unwell, please stay at home

All users must sign the Contact Trace Register located at the entrance door to the hall. Gym users will sign in to the Contact Trace Register in the gym foyer. Full details are required, i.e. full name and phone number and/or email – it may be necessary to contact you!

Sanitiser is available at the entrance to the hall, gym, squash court and toilets. Everyone needs to sanitised hands upon arrival and departure please. Note that there is no hot water available for the recommended hand washing so using sanitiser is important.

The facility will be cleaned twice each day and times will be blocked out on the online booking system for this.

All users will maintain the 1m distance from people they know and 2m from strangers at all times.

To assist with the recommended distancing, the following restriction on user numbers are required:
o No more than 4 people in the gym at any one time
o Only 2 people may be present at the squash court at any one time.
o No one is to sit, stand or loiter in the hallway – this is to allow for social distancing for all users who are coming and going
o No more than 10 people can be present inside the main hall area at any one time.

GYM USERS
o No more than 4 in the gym at a time
o You must have booked online prior to arrival
o You need to disinfect all equipment immediately before and after use
o Disinfectant and paper towels will be provided for you to do this. Paper towels should be discarded in the cardboard box provided immediately after use
o Maintain social distancing at all times
o Please do not enter the gym before your booked time and ensure you exit the gym as soon as your time is up. There is a 15 minute gap between bookings. This is to ensure no more than 4 people are in the gym at a time and to ensure social distancing can be observed.

SQUASH USERS
o You must have booked online using the new system, prior to arrival https://franzhall.skedda.com/
o The Franz Josef Squash page is no longer sufficient to make bookings
o No more than 2 people are to be present at the squash court at anytime
o Please disinfect any common surfaces (walls, door opening area) and wipe sweat off the floor before you leave
o The common practice of a round robin is not allowed at this stage – this will assist with allowing appropriate social distancing outside the squash court, in the hallway area
o Please do not enter the hallway or squash court area before your booked time and ensure you exit the court and hallway area as soon as your time is up. There is a 15 minute gap between bookings. This is to ensure no more than 2 people are in the squash area at a time and to ensure social distancing can be observed.
o

HALL USERS
o The hirer of the hall is responsible for providing a safety plan to the CDO/FJCC at the time of booking
o Approval to use the hall will be confirmed once an appropriate safety plan is agreed to
o No more than 10 people in the hall at a time
o The hirer should, wherever possible, have groups use the side door as entry and exit to avoid unnecessary contact with others in the hallway to the main entrance/exit area
o Hand sanitiser should be used be each person on arrival and departure
o Groups using the side door need to complete a contact trace register and the hirer is responsible for leaving a copy of that register under CDO office door upon departure from the facility

No one is to be on the premises for more than 2 hours at any one time.

The online booking system will show times that are blocked out for cleaning – no one should be at the facility during cleaning times.

Failure to observe the membership rules or Covid-19 Alert Level 2 restrictions may result in membership being terminated.

NEW HALL ENTRY
To get your entry code, you need to pay your membership.

That can be done at the hall on Monday 18 May 2020 between 10am – 11am. If you can’t make it on Monday, we can also help you with this on Wednesday afternoon between 4pm – 5pm. Please note that we do not have eft-pos facility so you will need to bring cash please. The prices are below.

You can pay your membership into the FJ Community Council bank account but you will not be given your code until the funds have cleared. Please advise me if you want to do this and we will set it up for you.

MEMBERSHIP COST
As in recent years, the cost for membership is as follows:

GYM
1 month $40
3 months $60
