The expanding Tairāwhiti MeshCore communication network has been on the move. This time TEMO’s Marcus Tibble and contractor Liam Cottle have been out and about on the Coast installing more MeshCore repeaters near Tikitiki.
Now there are just a few more repeaters to be installed between Tikitiki and Te Araroa-Potaka and the northern boundary will be fully connected.
Marcus also met with a group from Te Whatu Ora (Gisborne Hospital) to explain how the MeshCore system is being deployed and used by Tairāwhiti Emergency Management. Health are looking to create a back-up to their own communication platforms.
The MeshCore system enables the users to text others on the network which connects to the Emergency Coordination Centre with the support of solar powered repeaters. It is a system that is another layer of back-up when cell towers and data networks go offline during emergencies.

A joint venture between AREC and Tairāwhiti Emergency Management has added another solid layer of communication back-up should other systems fail . . . and it could be a gamechanger for Tairāwhiti.
Amateur Radio Emergency Communications and TEMO have installed Winlink, a radio email system that uses radio frequencies to send and receive email messages without the internet. It is widely used by emergency management and amateur radio emergency groups during disaster responses.
The new TEMO Winlink has HF, VHF and UHF frequency capabilities. The HF server will keep searching for another HF server nationally or worldwide until it locates one with an active internet connection and use that connection to send emails. If there is no internet connection to be found, it can send emails amongst each of the national or international servers.
Pictured are TEMO group manager Ben Green (left) and AREC northern regional manager Steve Main in front of the new gear.

👧🏻 Littlies under the Pohutukawa Kids Home-Based Childcare and Education service are all the safer after the region’s eight educators spent an information evening with the TEMO team to make sure they are ready for any emergency.
TEMO’s Karl Scragg and Marcus Tibble gave them an insight into emergency evacuation plans and the Tairāwhiti tsunami zones. “It’s about empowering the Pohutukawa Kids’ educators to be better informed and prepared in their homes,” says Karl.
Pohutukawa Kids visiting teacher Raelene Somerton felt the evening had been of huge value for her educators who had around 30 youngsters under their wings. “It encouraged us to look at our grab bags and make sure we are all on the same page,” she said. “Most of our educators’ homes are out of the tsunami zones, so that was a sigh of relief, and now those in the zones know how to be best prepared. They’ll all be relaying the plans to the families too so they all know what would happen.”
The evening made her realise too just how limited communication could be if something happens. 💙

⚠️ HEADS UP | Logs in the water near East Cape

Our Harbourmaster was notified this afternoon by Maritime authorities that around 50 logs went overboard from a vessel north of East Cape this morning.

If you're heading out on the water in that area, keep your eyes open.

Logs floating at or just below the surface are a serious hazard, especially in rough seas.
We'll share more information as we get it. Stay safe out there 🌊

Here's some info from Maritime NZ

Current nav warnings can be found here:
maritimenz.govt.nz/navigational-warnings/ or hear them through relayed broadcasts on via VHF 16 and broadcast on the associated VHF working channels around the coast, plus on MF/HF radio and all approved satellite systems carried on board large commercial ships.

If you are a recreational craft water user heading out, good passage planning and understanding the risks is a key way to keep safe on the water.
