UPDATE 6.22pm -
Cape Palliser Road from Te Kopi will be CLOSED to all traffic from 8pm tonight (15 Feb) due to large swells which could impact the road. An update will be provided at 8am tomorrow morning.
----------------------------------------------
โ ๏ธ Severe weather for Wairarapa โ potential for Martinborough, coastal and rural communities to be temporarily isolated โ ๏ธ
Rain, wind, and swell warnings are in place throughout the Wairarapa from this afternoon (Sunday) through to tomorrow (Monday), and residents should be prepared for potentially severe impacts.
Current forecasts are for rain from the weather front to impact most seriously the coastal hills, from Cape Palliser north, including Tuturumuri, Tora, Flat Point, Riversdale, Castlepoint, Tinui, and Mataikona.
The peak of the storm is likely to arrive at around 9pm.
๐ People with experience of flooding and living close to waterways should consider self-evacuating in daylight.
๐ Anyone needing guaranteed access to larger centres for medical or other important appointments should consider taking steps today to travel in daylight before the height of the storm.
๐ง In Martinborough, the Waihenga, Ponatahi, and Tuhitarata (also known as Kahutara) bridges are likely to be closed due to high river water levels expected around 4am.
๐ง Cape Palliser Road will be closed to visitors this afternoon as a result of the swell. It will remain open to residents for now but also has the potential to close to all traffic later on.
๐ง The combination of rain and wind raises the likelihood of road closures through slips and fallen trees.
๐ง The Remutaka Hill road would be expected to be close if winds reach 130km/h in the area.
Unnecessary travel should be avoided.
