The Glentunnel Museum contains an extensive collection of items recording the history of the area which has seen much rural industrialism, particularly the pottery and brickworks. The museum has an extensive library of books written about the district and history of local service men who fought in WWI and WWII. Recently discovered in our archives this great photo of the Coalgate Saleyards taken possibly in the 1930s. The stock agents office is on the right and also the large ramp for unloading cattle off the rail wagons.
Does anyone have any information they could share about this?

• Bob thanked the committee members for time and effort put into administration tasks along with maintenance and projects. Progress has been towards improving the water supply, and the ongoing of cataloguing items onto the eHive (an online museum programme). This provides not only “in the cloud” storage of exhibits but enables viewers to research from home. The committee is waiting on a response from the Selwyn District regarding the submission made to Annual plan.
• Encouraging more visitors, using SDC funds and exchanging volunteer hours at local events in for monetary donations need to continue to assist with maintenance and projects.

The AGM was followed by a committee meeting
• Monthly working bees are providing a great opportunity to carry out some maintenance tasks and update displays.
• The cataloguing team are making great progress with sorting exhibits into labelled storage boxes ready for cataloguing.
The next committee meeting is to be held on 20 July 2026. Interested residents are always welcome.

Keys points from the Glentunnel Museum Incorporated recent meeting
• Timber has been purchased to revamp the tipping cart

• South Malvern Cemetery – we are waiting on information from the Selwyn District Council before further progress can be made on making /erecting a sign for the unmarked graves area. The SDC are planning on revamping the sign at the main entrance.

• Next working bee to be held on Sunday 7 June 1pm – 4pm

• Thanks to ex pupils, several names have been added to our collection of Glentunnel & South Malvern School photographs

• Cataloguing sessions – a great start has been made to sort documents and photographs into labelled storage boxes.

• Cataloguing sessions are held on the second and fourth Mondays on the month – 10am – 12 noon.

• The Committee has agreed to once again participate in the Christchurch Heritage festival in October. This year’s theme is Connections

• Although the Museum is closed on Sundays during the winter visitors are welcome to make an appointment by contacting us at [email protected]

• The next meeting will be the Museum’s A G M will be held 7.30pm Monday 22 June 2026 at the Museum.
New members are always most welcome.

Lest We Forget
Sam Weastell son of George and Eliza Weastell of Glentunnel, was killed in action June 1917 and is buried in the La Plus Dove Farm War Cemetery in Belgium not far from Ypres. He is remembered on the South Malvern Memorial Gates and the Honours Board in the Glentunnel Community Centre.

After WW1, the family of every serviceman killed received a bronze plaque of condolence, also known as the 'Dead Man's Penny' or 'Death Penny' or 'Widow's Penny'.
The design shows Britannia holding an olive wreath over the space for the dead man’s name. A growling lion stands at her feet, while a smaller lion can be seen at the lower edge, biting the German eagle. Empire sea power is represented by two dolphins. A sprig of oak suggests sturdy Britishness.
The man’s name was added without his rank. As with WW1 gravestones, all were seen as equal in death.
