🌧️The water shutdown at Coal Creek this evening has been postponed due to the high level of the Grey River, which flooded the work site last night.

The work is now planned for Wednesday night, with Thursday as a backup.

For up to six hours on Wednesday, during work to move the water main at the Coal Creek bridge site, consumers will be relying on reservoir supply.

The work will be done from 10pm to 4am to minimise disruption.
The Council has reservoirs at Omoto, Arnott Heights, Tasman View, and Stanton Crescent. We will be reliant on these and, while the work has been planned in detail, there is potential for loss of supply should it be extended for any reason.

There is the potential for water loss in some elevated areas, and there may be limited or varying pressure during the works.

Residents of the following areas should continue to conserve water: Greymouth, Cobden, Blaketown, Boddytown, Karoro, South Beach, Paroa, Kaiata, Dobson, Stillwater, and Coal Creek, as well as Runanga, Dunollie, Rapahoe, and Taylorville.

As a backup, please ensure you have water in stock to last several days.

For road users, a closure will be in place on SH6 between Taylorville Road Intersection and Cobden Bridge on Wednesday. A detour is available via State Highway 7 and Taylorville Road, adding 15-20 minutes to the journey.

After more than 70 years of whitebaiting on the Grey River, Colin Skates’s best catch was 60lb in one day.

“My mum started taking me when I was three or four, at Kaiata where the slip is.”
When they moved to town, his dad was a railway signalman and would watch him from the signal box above the river.

He fished under the wharf, then at Cobden, and now at Blaketown.

“I get a feed for the family. There is always some in the freezer. I’ve got a kilo left, so it’s time to fill up.”

And the best way to eat whitebait? The usual, but with vinegar, Colin says.
The season opened on September 1.

💧 Greater Greymouth residents are now being asked to conserve water ahead of a major shutdown this coming Monday, when the NZTA will be working on the new Coal Creek bridge.

🏃‍♀️ From the starting line to the finish line, our community is made stronger by the spaces that bring us together.

The Greymouth Athletic Club was one of the recipients of funding from our last Community-Led Vibrancy Fund round, receiving support towards the ongoing maintenance of the track and field at ANZAC Park.

The funding helped cover some of the practical costs involved in keeping the grounds in great condition, including diesel, weed-killer, line-marking paint, and ground and ride-on mower maintenance. During the busy summer season, the park requires mowing twice a week, with each mow taking around two to three hours.

Maintained entirely by volunteers, this much-loved space is used by around 120 club members each year, thousands of local school students, and the wider community for sport, fitness, recreation and events.

“Organisations like ours rely heavily on support from programmes such as the Community-Led Vibrancy Fund to continue operating and serving our communities,” says Patrick Boot, President of the Greymouth Athletic Club.

As the only officially surveyed athletics track on the West Coast, it provides an inclusive space for people of all ages and abilities to get active, connect and enjoy the outdoors. The club’s volunteers have transformed and maintained the former dump site over decades, creating a valuable community asset that contributes to the vibrancy of the Grey District.

📖The Greymouth Library is now officially fines-free.

The new policy means no more late fees on overdue books, and all existing overdue fines also being wiped.

Research from North America to New Zealand shows fewer books are ‘lost’ to the system when fines are removed.

Grey District Council Library, Heritage and Culture Manager Anthony Hunter said:
“There’s no evidence that overdue charges make people return books on time. In fact, research shows fewer books are lost when you remove overdue fines.”

The new library had 13,000 visitors in its first month and saw a huge surge in new members.

Mr Hunter said they did not want to deter people with fines from visiting.

💧The precautionary boil water notice for Greater Greymouth has now been lifted.

Flushing of the mains has been completed in Kaiata, and further checks of chlorine levels were carried out this morning, with results as expected.

In addition, a third clear test result was received yesterday afternoon. This means we have achieved three consecutive days of clear testing.

Based on the recent testing, treatment plant monitoring, flushing, and chlorine level monitoring, Council is satisfied that the precautionary boil water notice can now be lifted.

The sample containing E. coli was taken on Thursday as part of work being undertaken to connect the Kaiata water zone to Kaiata Park, and we have reason to believe it may have been a sampling error.

We apologise for any inconvenience and thank people for their patience.

The notice was lifted at 12.30pm today.
