"I didn’t start out wanting to see kids": Are p**n algorithms feeding a generation of p*edophiles – or creating one?

‘Police, charities, lawyers and child protection experts are asking what is driving this tidal wave of offending, and finding one common thread: the explosion over the past 10 to 20 years of free-to-view and easily accessible online p**nography. Material so violent it would have been considered highly extreme a generation ago is now readily available on iPads, desktops and the phones in teenagers’ pockets. A growing body of research is beginning to warn of how problematic p**n habits can be a pathway into viewing images of children being abused.

Andy, who was jailed for six months for consuming and sharing images of child s*xual abuse, said:

‘“I am fully accountable. None of this is an excuse. I look back at what I did with huge regret and shame. But I didn’t start out wanting to see kids. I was addicted to p**n and I went down a road of being totally desensitised as I got further and further from what was normal.

‘“I was using p**n as a coping mechanism for all sorts of things – stress, loss, general life problems. When you ma******te to p**n, you get an intense dopamine hit. Then those first videos start to become boring. Your brain starts to say, that’s not good enough. Soon you are watching r*pe fantasies – there are loads of categories like this on mainstream sites. Then it’s teenagers. The algorithms keep showing you more extreme stuff.”

‘He argues that the mainstream p**n sites encourage an interest in young girls. “They push the boundaries as much as they can, with content around young women dressed in school uniforms, for example; in**st themes; old men paired with young women.”’

No surprise here. Social media can barely be handled by adults, what makes us think our kids are developmentally capable of such a burden?

All of these are amazing! Highly recommend the Childhood 2.0 YouTube and the “It’s Time We Talked…” YouTube.

I am still alive!

The past few months have been busy with all kinds of fun. Raising a puppy, teaching a dance class twice a week, donating both time and blood with the Morrinsville community patrol, Waikato age concern and the New Zealand blood services.

I haven’t forgotten about Tinana Talks! I am happy to be speaking at a parent night at my current school St. Joseph’s Morrinsville on Monday night. Internet safety is still near and dear to my heart.

Stay tuned for more this year! 🤍

Interactionz Visual Communication team will be working alongside Asha and creating illustrations for the workshop which people who attend can take home with them to remind themselves of how to stay safe online.

The workshop will be in the Te Kete Tuauri & Te Kete Tuatea meeting rooms. Come and join us. You’ll be glad you did!
