Today, members of the Hamilton Fire Brigade came together to celebrate Matariki — a special time to reflect, reconnect, and look ahead.

It was a privilege to gather as a whānau, to remember those we've lost, to share kai, and to acknowledge the strength and unity that carries us through each year. Matariki reminds us of the importance of community, resilience, and gratitude — values that lie at the heart of everything we do.

As we look to the year ahead, we're proud to continue serving our community with the same dedication and aroha. Here's to new beginnings, stronger connections, and a safe and hopeful year for all.

✨ Mānawatia a Matariki ✨

Today we recognise and honour an extraordinary milestone as Steve "Sooty" retires after an incredible 49 years of service!

Sooty began his journey with the organisation back in 1976 in Mosgiel, before continuing his work in Dunedin and eventually making the move to Hamilton, where he has been a valued and much-loved member of our team ever since.

Over nearly five decades, Sooty has seen enormous change and growth within the organisation, and through it all he’s remained a steady, reliable, and respected presence. His dedication, loyalty, and wealth of knowledge have left a lasting legacy.

Sooty – thank you for your unwavering commitment, your humour, and the countless contributions you’ve made over the years. You’ve made a real difference, and you will be missed.

Wishing you all the very best in your well-earned retirement! 👏🫡

Can you be a voice for your community? Are you well-connected, respected and able to provide insight into the diverse views and concerns of these communities? 👫📢

By joining our Local Advisory Committees, you’ll help shape how Fire and Emergency and your local community can work together to prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies when they happen.

This is a fantastic opportunity to ensure your community’s voices and interests are reflected in our national and local planning by helping us to better understand what matters – now and in the future.

If this sounds like you or someone you know, find out more at www.fireandemergency.nz/LACs. Applications close on 14 April.
