Step into Edwardian Wellington and walk inside one of New Zealand’s most famous short stories.

The Katherine Mansfield Garden recreates the world of The Garden Party, capturing a moment just before a celebration begins. The table is set, the band is ready, and the guests are about to arrive.

In this video, Dan O'Rourke (HG Tour Guide) and Gus Flower (Horticulture & Operations Manager) explore how this literary moment has been carefully rebuilt at Hamilton Gardens.

🌹 Watch the full video and plan your visit.

Hidden inside the Kitchen Garden is a shed full of enchanted creatures 👀
This cosy space belongs to the Garden Keeper — the creator and caretaker of the gardens around you. Between his busy days, he rests here, writes in his notebook, and shares the shed with wee folk from the Mushroom Lands who have built tiny homes inside its walls and doors. 🏚️
They’re shy, but they love visitors who take the time to look closely. Every shelf, corner and desk has something to discover.
A gentle, imaginative experience for curious minds of all ages 🌱

Did you know Hamilton Gardens was fully designed before the first garden was ever built?

🎙️ In a recent RNZ interview, director Lucy Ryan shares how founder Peter Sergel imagined all 30 gardens from the very beginning.

With 18 now open, the 19th about to launch, and each new garden taking two to three years to complete, the full vision is still unfolding — a long‑term story of imagination, patience, and commitment.

Stone by stone, our Medieval Garden is taking shape 🏰
Cladding and tiling are now wrapping the walls and floors of the cloister hallways, creating the rich textures you’d expect to find in a centuries‑old garden.
As the afternoon light moves through the space, it’s already starting to feel wonderfully medieval — calm, beautiful and full of atmosphere.
Not long to go now… we can’t wait to welcome you in 🌿

Many people know Hamilton Gardens as a beautiful place to walk.
What fewer realise is just how rare — and internationally significant — it really is.
🎬 The Time Traveller’s Guide to Hamilton Gardens is a new feature‑length documentary that tells the remarkable story behind the gardens — from a former rubbish dump to one of the great gardens of the world.
Designed by visionary landscape architect Dr Peter Sergel, Hamilton Gardens was imagined as a place that tells the story of humanity through landscape — where each garden represents a different time, culture, or way of thinking.
Discover how this ambitious idea took root, grew over decades, and became one of Aotearoa’s great creative achievements.
