Tamatea Pokaiwhenua Pokaimoana

Kaiako had an awesome afternoon, going from teacher to learner in wānanga, deepening our knowledge of Tamatea Pokaiwhenua Pokaimoana, to be able to provide rich learning for our tamariki this term.

Ask your tamariki to share their learning so far. We have only just begun but they can already share alot.

Enjoy your weekend, whānau and make sure to spoil all our māmā!

The Ode of Remembrance

E kore rātou e kaumātuatia
Pēnei i a tātou kua mahue nei
E kore hoki rātou e ngoikore
Ahakoa pehea i ngā āhuatanga o te wā
I te hekenga atu o te rā
Tae noa ki te aranga mai i te ata
Ka maumahara tonu tātou ki a rātou.
Ka maumahara tonu tātou ki a rātou.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them.
We will remember them.

Wiki tuatahi | Week one

We have had a great start back to term 2, with a focus on ANZAC. A lot of our tīpuna were soldiers who went to war, so learning about their efforts has been a beautiful way to connect to our whakapapa.

Ka maumahara tonu tātou ki a rātou.

It is ANZAC Day tomorrow, Saturday 25th April. School is closed on Monday.

Kia ora whānau - we look forward to seeing you all soon ☺️

Kia ora e te whānau,

Keep updated with the weather warnings for this weekend, please. We have strong wind and rain warnings to hit Hawkes Bay on Sunday. Follow this page for informed updates.

Kia haumaru.

🟠Strong Wind Warning and Heavy Rain Watch🟡

10:20AM, Friday, 10/04/26.

MetService New Zealand update on the upcoming weather for the weekend.

💨 STRONG WIND WARNING – Hawke's Bay 🟠
Period: 16 hours from 10am Sunday 12 April to 2am Monday, 13 April.
Area: Gisborne/Tairawhiti, Hawke's Bay and Taihape.
Forecast: Severe gale easterlies changing to severe gale westerly Sunday afternoon or evening, gusting 130km/h in exposed places. Moderate chance of upgrading to a Red Warning.

🌧HEAVY RAIN WATCH- Hawke's Bay 🟡
Period: 16 hours from 2am to 6pm Sun, 12 April.
Area: Gisborne/Tairawhiti about and south of Tolaga Bay, Hawke's Bay ranges, and coastal hills south of Napier.
Forecast: Periods of heavy rain, and amounts may approach or exceed warning criteria. Large swells and coastal inundation are likely. High chance of this being upgrading to a Warning.

Safety advice.
If life, health or property is at risk, call 111.

SEVERE WIND.
➡Don't walk around outside during severe wind. Don't drive unless necessary. Strong winds can fell trees and poles, tear off roofs, and cause branches and debris to fly at high speed.

COASTAL INUNDATION/FLOODING.
➡Don’t take any chances. Act quickly if you see rising water. Floods and flash floods can happen quickly. If you see rising water, do not wait for official warnings. Head for higher ground and stay away from floodwater.

➡Do not try to walk, play, swim, or drive in floodwater: even water just 15 centimetres deep can sweep you off your feet, and half a metre of water will carry away most vehicles. Flood water is often contaminated and can make you sick.

LANDSLIDES.
➡Landslides can occur without any warning signs. Be aware of the potential for landslides, particularly in the weeks after potential triggering events, such as heavy rainfall, earthquakes, and previous landslides. If you see a landslide, move quickly out of its path and stay away from it.

Steps to Get Ready.
Take steps now to get ready before Cyclone Vaianu arrives:
➡ Bring inside or tie down anything that strong winds could break or pick up. If you have a trampoline, turn it upside down to minimise the surface area exposed to wind and tie it down firmly.

➡ Remove any debris or loose items from around your property. Branches and firewood can become airborne in strong winds.

➡ Check on neighbours, especially those who may be elderly, isolated, or without communications.

➡ Clear waste and debris away from drains.

➡ Make and practise your emergency plan, make a grab bag and have emergency supplies in case you need to evacuate. Prepare for 3 -5 days of supplies.

➡Be prepared with torches and have a solar or battery powered radio so you can keep up with the latest news and alerts.

You can find more advice to get prepared at GetReady.govt.nz

What are we doing.
➡Hawke's Bay Civil Defence will continue to work amongst emergency services, partner organisations, and councils, to keep a close watch on the situation, prepare for any impacts, and we will provide updates as necessary.

Tēnā koutou katoa e te whānau o Te Kura o Manuhiwi 🤍

As I come to the end of my time here, I just want to take a moment to acknowledge and thank our incredible community.

For the past eight years, this kura has been more than just a place of work — it has been home for my whānau. My tamariki have grown up here, my husband has been part of this kura, and together we have been deeply connected to this special place.

To our whānau, thank you for trusting me with your children. It has been an absolute privilege to be part of their learning journeys — to watch them grow, to celebrate their successes, and to support them along the way. Those moments will stay with me always.

I am so grateful for the relationships we have built. They are what make this kura so special, and I know they will continue well beyond my time here.

As I move into this next chapter, my promise is to continue building strong pathways for our tamariki and whānau, so their journey can continue through to Te Aratika. This is not goodbye to the kaupapa — it is a continuation of it.

Although I may be leaving, my heart will always be here. A part of me will always remain with Te Kura o Manuhiwi and our community.

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa 🤍

Today was a very special day for us, and especially so for Whaea Casey. We all got aboard the pahi and headed over to Te Aratika for pōwhiri, where we handed our taonga over to begin her new haerenga at Te Aratika High School in term 2.

It was lovely to have some of our whānau tautoko today, and thank you whānau for having your tamariki to school on time.

Our tamariki were amazing as always. They represented themselves, our kura and their whānau with pride and also gave the big Te Aratika boys a good run at ki-o-rahi.

It is Whaea Casey's last day with us at Manuhiwi āpōpō.

Kia ū, kia ora, kia rere Whaea!
