Hastings Volunteer Fire Fighters Welcome to the Hastings Volunteer Firefighters page. On the clear mid-summers night, 18 men gathered it at the Hastings Hotel, set deep in discussion.

We’re here to help in an emergency and protect what matters most to you The little Hawke’s Bay township of nearly 2000 souls on the Heretaunga plains were merely entering its fourth night of the New Year in 1886. From there intent facial expressions, it was obvious the men consi

dered the business of the evening of paramount importance. With the sudden sharp growth of Hastings in the past 18 months or so, outbreaks of fire, some of them large and at frequent intervals, had given rise to such concern among the settlers through loss of property. There was no vestige of any firefighting organisation set up whatever, and water was in particular short supply. Well equipped bucket parties had fought the flames in vain. In consequence, particularly every building affected burnt to the ground. Following considerable preliminary discussion, chairman Sam Tong said “Gentlemen, I move we inaugurate the Hastings Volunteer Fire Brigade – the main purpose of the meeting”. The proposal received unanimous support.

Training last night saw the crews sharpening up our skills, by drafting water from a creek using one of our fire appliances. 💧🚒

Being able to establish a reliable water supply from natural sources is a vital skill when hydrants aren’t available, especially during rural and vegetation fires. Great hands-on training for the team and another chance to build confidence operating in challenging conditions.

Also a huge thank you to the Napier Operational Support Unit for joining us. They took the time to show our members through their truck, explain it's capabilities, and provided lighting support that helped illuminate our training drill perfectly.

Their knowledge, professionalism, and support are a massive asset to the Hawke’s Bay region, and we really appreciate them coming over and working alongside us. Cant wait for next time 👏 🔥 🚒

What an incredible weekend celebrating 140 years of the Hastings Fire Brigade!

We kicked things off on Friday night with our Honours Evening, where we proudly recognised 25 years of dedicated service from Brad, Mel, and JK. A huge milestone and a true testament to their commitment to the brigade and our community.

Saturday kept the momentum going with a great afternoon of indoor bowls — plenty of laughs, a bit of friendly competition, and awesome turnout from current and past members. Congratulations to the winners, and everyone who participated. The day then rolled seamlessly into an evening of celebration, with a fantastic dinner and drinks shared among good company.

A big thank you to everyone who helped organise the weekend and to all who came along to celebrate. It was a fitting way to honour our history, our people, and the strong camaraderie that makes this brigade what it is.

Here’s to the next chapter! 🔥

Thank you 🙏

Thank you for taking notice of the fire safety messages over the previous few weeks, while Hawke's Bay was at high risk of fires.

Rain and cooler temperatures have eased the fire risk in parts of Hawke's Bay which has enabled us to reduce restrictions on open air fires in some places and remove them in others.

From today (Tuesday 20 January) Ahuriri-Heretaunga, Tukituki West and Tukituki East zones will move to a Restricted Fire Season.

A Restricted Fire Season means you must apply for a permit. DO NOT light your fire until your permit is approved.

Wairoa Inland, Wairoa Coast, Te Haroto, Esk-Tutaekuri, Tararua West, Tararua East Tararua Central, Porangahau and Southern Hawke's Bay Coast will move to an Open Fire Season.

Wherever you are, go to www.checkitsalright.nz to make sure of the fire season in your location, and what rules apply to open fires.

It’s getting hot out there, so listen to what we’ve got to say…

🔥 High fire danger across Hawke’s Bay 🔥

Things are heating up across Ahuriri Heretaunga, Central Hawke’s Bay, and Northern Tararua from tomorrow.

With temperatures over 30°C, strong winds, low humidity, and very little rain, we have the potential to have what Fire and Emergency calls spike fire risk days.

🗣️ These conditions mean fires can start easily, spread fast, and quickly become extremely difficult to control.

🚒 Our crews are ready and prepared — but we need the public’s help too.

A few small actions can make a big difference:

🚫 Hold off on spark-makers

Postpone mowing, grinding, welding, or using power tools.

🔥 Check old burn piles

If they’re less than two months old, make sure they’re fully out.

🚒 Clear access for fire trucks

At least 4m wide x 4m high on driveways.

📍 Make your RAPID number visible

It helps crews find you faster when seconds matter.

📞 See smoke? Call 111 immediately

Early calls help us stop small fires becoming big ones.

🚫 Fire permits suspended

Most of Hawke’s Bay is already in a restricted or prohibited fire season, and all fire permits are suspended across the District from today.

👉 Stay up to date at www.checkitsalright.nz

Let’s all do our bit to keep Hawke’s Bay safe.

One spark is all it takes — let’s not be that spark. 🔥🚒
