Gallery Cottage

Gallery Cottage Gallery Cottage is a purpose-built holiday cottage set among the tall and elegant gum trees. or not.

Between the Ruahine Ranges and the Pacific Ocean is a holiday home where you can truly relax. Gallery Cottage, in the peace and quiet of the Hawkes Bay countryside, was built for holidays. Sit and enjoy a glass of local wine while watching a spectacular sunset, listen to tuis singing in the gum trees, read in the sun on the patio, watch TV and cook a meal…. Light and airy, with patio doors facing

west and windows on every side to let in the cool breeze on hot days, Gallery Cottage is simply but comfortably furnished and equipped with everything you need for a self-catering weekend or holiday. It shares a driveway with the main house, which dates from the early 20th century and was transported from the city of Napier to a one acre section near the village of Maraekakaho in the 1990s. Shortly after the move, Gallery Cottage was built among the tall and elegant gum trees which make 425 Kereru Road a local landmark. With its back to the main house, the cottage’s patio garden looks out over farmland to the distant mountains. Guests can enjoy complete privacy if they wish, or visit the house to share the odd glass of wine or cup of tea and a chat with their hosts if they feel like it. Judith and Jonathan enjoy meeting people and will be only too pleased to pass on their knowledge of local restaurants, activities and places to visit in Hawkes Bay. The cottage provides modern cooking facilities, but for the days when cooking does not appeal, the Chook and Filly café bar is roughly five kilometres away and open for meals between Wednesday and Sunday. The nearby village of Havelock North has a good selection of restaurants and a little further afield, Hastings and Napier offer huge choice in eating places. Maraekakaho is in the heart of Hawkes Bay wine country and visitors driving from Hasting or Napier will pass through dozens of vineyards, some of which have wonderful restaurants.

We've just hosted Jess and Tim on the weekend of their wedding. Hawke's Bay put on the best weather for their big day.
We were so pleased to find their lovely comments and ideas for other guests in our visitors book. Thanks both and our very best wishes for a happy life together.

At last the rain has stopped and the sun is peeping through. Although not nearly as bad as ex-tropical cyclone Gabrielle in February, we've just been through another spell of very heavy rain and winds. There's quite a bit of tidying up to do in our garden but throughout it all Gallery Cottage has remained a cosy, comfortable haven from it all. As you can see, even when the skies are grey the views across our neighbour's fields are lovely and a winter stay can be just as good as a summer one! 🙂 Now that our bath refurbishment is complete and we're up and running again, why not plan a visit and treat yourself? We would love to see you.

We will soon be back in business at Gallery Cottage, on Airbnb and back to meeting lots of lovely guests. It's been too long!

Our lovely Victorian claw-foot bath has needed some tlc for a while now. Before Covid we had lined up a company in Auckland to renovate the inner surface, but things got difficult and it never happened.

We recently found out that our neighbour across the road is just the man for the job! Once Easter is over, the bath will be taken out of the cottage and over to Jab's workshop, where the surface will be transformed.

Once it's done, let the bookings begin!

Two and a half weeks on from Cyclone Gabrielle, Gallery Cottage is playing a small part in what will be a very long recovery process. Much of Hawke's Bay has been devastated and it will be years before all the roads, bridges, rail tracks, farms and vineyards recover and everyone has a home to call their own.

Helping to make a start on this process are four guys who have set up a base in our cottage while they survey rivers and railways across Hawke's Bay; they are Aaron and Will from Christchurch Helicopters and Justin and James from Canterbury University.

Using a scanning system known as LiDAR ((light detection and ranging) two of the team are out and about in a helicopter every fine day while two remain here working on the computer system.

So many people have lost their homes and livelihoods and 12 people died so we count ourselves incredibly lucky. On the morning of 14th February we woke to see a huge lake across our garden and the neighbouring fields. The usually mellow little stream which flows past the cottage was a torrent.

The water gradually receded from under the house and cottage and now you wouldn't know that anything had happened, apart from a few muddy patches where gravel was washed away.

We don't know how long our lovely guests will be with us, but once things are a bit more settled here, we look forward to receiving visitors once again!

It's over a year since we posted here on Facebook. We've just seen our wisteria and trees in flower once more.
Our cottage is currently being used by a family member and so will not be available as a holiday cottage for a few months. We'll post here just as soon as we're back operating as normal.
Stay safe and well everyone! 🙂

I couldn't resist posting some more photos of our wisteria and flowering cherries. If not the best show for several years it's at least equal best!
And it's about 27 degrees today!

It's just a bit windy at Gallery Cottage! The sign did go almost horizontal.

At last - a drop of welcome rain in Maraekakaho this morning; not enough to break the drought, but refreshing and hopefully enough to start some grass growth!

We've just booked in our first post-lockdown guests for a long weekend later this month and Gallery Cottage is ready and waiting for all those Kiwis who are keen to have a change of scene and enjoy everything that Hawkes Bay has to offer.

With a café bar, a brewery and many wineries on our doorstep, this is the ideal place for a break for your bubble.

Judith and I have just realised that we need to apologise to recent guests at Gallery Cottage for the lack of clothes hangers in the bedroom. 😢 It seems that one of our previous guests thought that our hangers would look better at his/her house! If it was you who liberated them you only needed to ask kindly and we would have let you take them home...
Happy Christmas everyone and we hope you all have a great 2019.
