The Lake Hawea Volunteer Fire Brigade is proud to announce that Lily Graham has been appointed to the role of Deputy Chief of the brigade.
Lily has been a valued and respected member of the brigade for ten years.
She brings an abundance of skills and experience from both an operational and management perspective to the role.

Many members of the community will be familiar with Lily through various channels such as cross-country skiing, delivering road safety/educational programmes and copious amounts of time spent cheering on her children at numerous school and sporting events.

The Lake Hawea brigade has a proud history of female members excelling in leadership roles, both within the brigade and beyond, and we know that Lily will undoubtedly carry on that tradition.
We are so very fortunate to have her in this position and offer her our sincere congratulations on the appointment.

šŸš’ National Volunteer Week 2026 šŸš’

This National Volunteer Week, we want to take a moment to recognise and thank the incredible people who make our brigade what it is.

When the siren sounds in Lake Hāwea , our volunteers leave warm beds, family dinners, work commitments, and everyday life behind to respond to emergencies and help keep our community safe. That level of commitment is only possible because of the support that stands behind every volunteer.

To our brigade members, thank you for the time, dedication, and commitment you give to serving and protecting our community.

To our partners, families, and whānau thank you for your understanding, patience, and support when we are called away at a momentā€™s notice.

To our local employers, thank you for allowing our volunteers to step away from work when the community needs them most.

To our community, thank you for your ongoing encouragement, generosity, and support throughout the year. Your support helps ensure we can continue to do what it takes to help you when you need us.

Volunteers make up 80% of Fire and Emergency New Zealand, and we are proud to represent the Lake Hāwea community 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

This week has also been a great opportunity to continue building our skills, along with our neighbouring brigade Makarora , with two evenings of First Aid Refresher training.
A big thank you to the New Zealand Red Cross for delivering an engaging and valuable course to our brigade. Ongoing training ensures we are always ready to respond and provide the best possible assistance to our community.

Congratulations to Lorne Capell on his appointment as Chief Fire Officer of the Lake Hawea Volunteer Fire Brigade.

This appointment represents a proud moment for the Lake Hawea community as we acknowledge Lorneā€™s longstanding dedication to both the Brigade and the people it serves. Since joining as a volunteer firefighter in 2014, Lorne has demonstrated unwavering commitment, professionalism, and a deep sense of responsibility to the community.

He brings to this role strong leadership, considerable mana, and a genuine pride in the Brigadeā€”qualities that reflect the values of our community and will ensure its continued strength and resilience. Lorne is held in the highest esteem by his fellow members, and his integrity, humility, and commitment to service position him well to lead with distinction.

It's not just the riders, horses and Jack Russell's that have been busy practising for the 2026 Wanaka A & P Show.

Members of the Lake Hawea Volunteer Fire Brigade who are participating in this years Sky Tower Challenge will be helping out in the arena as part of their fundraising efforts for Blood Cancer New Zealand.

Hello Hawea,
In the blink of an eye, weā€™ve said goodbye to 2025 and welcomed in 2026.
A bit belated but in reviewā€¦. it was another year where we were proud to serve our local, and ever-expanding community.

We had plenty of wins but dealt with some sad losses and our thoughts go out to those that had one less around the Christmas table in 2025.

The brigade would like to acknowledge and congratulate former Chief Fire Officer Doug Brenssell on being recognised in the New Years Honours List and awarded a very well-deserved Kingā€™s Service Medal.

Other notable performances:

Brigade stalwarts Warren Hewson and Jimmy Cotter received Life Honorary memberships.

Luggate once again came out on top in our Cameron Baines Memorial Cricket match.

Jimmy Cotter and Gus McAllister took out our annual awards for muster and incident attendance.

The brigade, amazingly supported by our wonderful businesses and locals, fundraised in excess of $24,000 for Blood Cancer New Zealand as part of the Sky Tower Challenge with three members, Amie Capell, Lily Graham and Lorne Capell coming 1st, 2nd & 3rd in their respective categories.

John Cooper took out first place in his category at the Otago/Southland Firefighter Challenge.

Africa Barker, Benn Cash, Sam Hensley and Amie Capell completed promotional courses and added extra stripes to their helmets.

As the attached image shows, overall, it was a busy year for the brigade and given the number of times the siren has sounded already this year, things are only getting more hectic.

Please rest assured we will continue to approach the challenges ahead with resolute determination and positivity.
