Family Works Southland

Family Works Southland Family Works is here to support children, young people and their families, through challenging times in their life.

Family Works is a service of Presbyterian Support Southland. The unmet needs of children in Invercargill led to Presbyterian Support Otago opening Cameron Children’s Home in 1917. The Southland association of Presbyterian Support was formed in 1919 and took over the operation of this home. From this, residential childcare continued as the main area of work over the next 40 years. The introduction

of the domestic purposes benefit reduced the number of children needing residential care and our last children’s home closed in 1989. There was still a desperate need for social services to support children, young people and their families and in 1991 we were approved as a CFSS & Community Service. Since then, Family Works has expanded to offer a wide range of services for Southland families. Read more on our website: https://pss.org.nz/about/history/

A big thank you to Sarah and Niamh and all North Road's Best Start Early Learning Centre families and staff for donating much-needed grocery items for families we are supporting. Family Works Southland was fortunate enough to be the recipient of the centre's PJ Day fundraiser last week. These items will be gratefully received by our families.

Our team had a great time at Southern Institute of Technology Re-O Week today, meeting students and sharing the many ways they can get involved with Family Works and Enliven Southland.
From rewarding career pathways and casual employment opportunities to meaningful volunteer roles, we loved talking with students about how they can make a difference in the lives of others while gaining valuable experience along the way.
A big thank you to everyone who stopped by our stall to have a chat, ask questions, and learn more about the work we do across Southland. We look forward to welcoming some new faces into our team and volunteer network in the future.

The invaluable work of our volunteers was recognised and celebrated at a thank you function last Wednesday night. Family Works relies on volunteers to support our Buddy Programme and foster care service. Their mahi enhances the lives of vulnerable Southland children and we couldn't be more grateful for their help, an impact that cannot be overstated.

The Southland community has once again given generously to the Kindness Collective Foundation's PJ Project this year. We picked up another 120 pyjamas from The Warehouse today. Thank you to everyone who donated and supported this fantastic initiative. Children in need we are supporting at Family Works will have a lovely, warm pair of new pyjamas to help keep them warm this winter.

Some of our fantastic foster carers at their long service awards last year (from left) Kim, Tyrone, Marianne, Danni, Melissa, Dean and Marina, who have dedicated more than 80 years of service between them. An incredible effort.
This week is National Volunteer Week, a time to acknowledge and celebrate volunteers across the country.
We have Big Buddies and foster carers who support young people in our community. Thank you to each and everyone one of you. We couldn't do this vital work without your support.

A big thank you to Nellie and Jenny of Altrusa International, Invercargill for the 25 activity packs donated by the group for children we are supporting. They are going to love the puzzles, stickers, crayons and other goodies in the packs. Altrusa has been a regular supporter of Family Works over many years. Their on-going support makes such a important difference in the lives of families we are helping.

The Kindness Collective Foundation's PJ Project has kicked off for the year and Family Works Southland is fortunate enough to be a recipient again this year. The pyjamas will be passed on to families in need we are supporting.
The PJ Project aims to provide children across Aotearoa with brand new pyjamas — helping bring warmth, comfort and better sleep this winter.
You can help by donating online at kindness.org.nz/ or by dropping off brand new pyjamas at collection bins in your local The Warehouse store. Every pair makes a difference.
