The telling of Whangaroa 🌀 histories to the next generation to further educate the ideas 💡 of our history is a step closer with the launch of an interactive learning app 📱

A new learning resource aimed at raising wider awareness and appreciation of 📜 local histories and te reo Māori is set to be launched in Whangaroa. The interactive learning app is designed to aid school 🏫 students in Whangaroa learn about local hapū histories.

The app is an important step in assisting hapū to reshape 🔹 the standard story and helps Whangaroa to engage in contemporary issues 🌀 with localised understanding. The app is available to download through Apple 🍎 and Google Play 🧩 app stores in both te reo Māori and English.

The first instalment covers the creation stories of local sites of significance Taratara Maunga ⛰ and Te Ara a Tāwhaki 🌱 and honour the long-held hapū narrative of ancient occupation and the principles of tangata whenua and kaitiakitanga 💚

The stories were a collaborative project between the 🟢 Whangaroa Papa Hapū, local kaumatua and kuia, Kiwa Digital, who developed the app, and the Ministry of Education though the Te Aho Ngārahu initiative.

Te Aho Ngārahu 🔸was established in 2017 as an initiative to improve the access of quality te reo Māori localised curriculum resources to support tauira (students)👩🏽‍💻, kaiako (teachers) 🧑🏻‍🏫 and kāhui ako (education providers) learning in and through te reo Māori in both Māori medium and English medium settings 📚

The Piri Wiremu Mokena Memorial Sports Tournament Constitution Committee regretfully announces the cancellation of the annual Labour Weekend tournament, scheduled 24-25 October 2020.

Given the current climate relating to COVID-19, and the challenges at our international borders, the committee considers the health, safety, and well-being of all marae whānau, especially our kaumātua (kuia & kaumatua), is of the utmost importance.

The Constitution Committee acknowledges the unprecedented times following the country-wide lockdown and the effects on communities and whānau.

“We have left this decision as late as practicable to give the tournament every chance of proceeding and yet have also wanted to communicate in a timely manner that allows our whānau and everyone working on the event the clarity required to change their plans accordingly” - Committee Chair, Phillip (Tata) Morgan.

“This is a significant disappointment for our tournament. It is a highlight on the Whangaroa calendar that our Marae, whānau and players aspire to.”

While disappointing, the committee is committed to reconvene this event in 2021, the tournaments 40th anniversary.

We thank 2020 host, Wainui Marae for their support and understanding of the current situation and look forward to them hosting in 2021.

“Labour weekend will be the first long weekend since lockdown. We trust whānau will use the time to reconnect and spend time with each other” - Mr Morgan.
