This week we take a little peek into Matuku Moana…
There’s always plenty happening in Matuku Moana, but lately it’s the sounds coming from the room that are pretty hard to miss.
Waiata seems to be a firm favourite, and honestly, if you’re anywhere nearby in the morning, you’re in for a treat. Hearing our babies practise their waiata every day with so much enthusiasm is enough to make you smile. There are definitely no half-hearted performances coming from this crew!
And our Year 3 & 4s have been making a bit more noise of their own. They’ve created an original bucket drum piece in music, and I got to watch and listen to what they’ve put together. So cool! Their rhythms, their ideas, their piece… and they were pretty proud of it too.
That rhythm carries into reading, where Dr Seuss and his wonderfully wacky world of rhyme, repetition and playful language has been keeping things fun while building those important early reading and phonics skills. The Lorax has even made its way off the pages and into their artwork.
Then there are the things that really grab this crew’s attention. For a while it was orca. 🐋 These majestic mammals didn’t just inspire learning in the classroom, they took over the playground kōrero too! Now their curiosity has blasted off in another direction, with planets and the solar system becoming the latest thing to explore. There are new planets being created in Matuku Moana with tall aliens, fat cats and winds that shoot out cotton candy. 🪐
In amongst all of that, mathematical brains are being stretched with symmetry, number knowledge, multiplication and division, while running and Ripper Rugby are keeping bodies moving outside.
There really is a little bit of everything happening in this room.
